I use my pets as grenades. If people are up in your face, that is kinda (your fault/not good/not going to work). I have yet to be able to tank a person in my face. But I have yet to been unable to kill a person that doesn't burn almost most all cooldowns and still die if I catch them at 50+ yards. Use humanoid tracking on your main. Add beast if you are scared of druids/shammy (wolf). Make sure hidden tracking is on. It won't show up too far away, but anything helps. If you are standing still guarding, you can use camoflauge (spelling, sorry).
It depends on the place you are playing at (defending a flag, guarding an entrance, etc). But you have traps, 5 of them, put them on round robin and lay them in a circle around you about 15 yards out. Have a flare handy to put down if you get spooked or see a stealther coming (he stealths on his way up to you). You can't have pets on auto-aggro anymore, but Blizzard thought that was too good. At least make sure on auto-assist.
You can see people coming at least from 60+ yards on mini-map or main screen. Turn down ground clutter and turn up viewing distance. I can't be sure, but I think viewing distance might have to be done in config file. Throw pets at person, but don't hunter's mark yet, don't give them a chance to auto-target you, make sure they target pets first from the pets attack. If they close to 45 yards, get ready to put in a rotation of concussive shot, tranq shot (for buff removal), serpent sting (to get a DOT on them so they can't get out of combat/stealth) and fill in with kill command/arcane shot. Constant concussive shots with pets intimidations should keep them at least at some range. Next if you have room to move back, do so, you have aspect of the pack that doesn't daze anymore, just looses speed with glyph. You also have 5 traps waiting for them between you and them, so even if you back out of your circle of traps, they will run right into them.
For pets, make all ferocity, you can change specs of pets from anything to anything (ferocity croc, ferocity buzzard, ferocity snake, etc). Look for one that does a slow, it used to be hyena, then changed to croc. You can get a buzzard or bear (I like buzzard for annoying sound and flapping in their face), to lower damage and get multiple people tagged for HKs. I like a stam buff and webbing of silithid. I like webbing and stats buff of shale spider. I have multiple sets of pets for different things. I like 5 wyverns (sorry for spelling) for cold slow and AOE. I like 5 spirit beast cats, both for stat buff (mastery) and heal and stealth. You can just use 5 cats at first until you get Gondria(s). I like a mixed pets for not thinking situations. I put them in a [nopet] situation so it calls them if I have no pets out of they despawned, etc.
I will throw my pets at people that are 80+ yards away sometimes to make them think about it. Sure my pets will despawn at 75 yards, but they don't like to think about trying to get to me, slowed and having 5 red ferocity kill commanded pets in their face all the way to get to me. They sometimes turn around and try a different way.
Yeah, stealthers will piss you off. No way around that. Use freezing traps. Use flares. Use disengage and deterrance. I like having draenei for thier GotN. 4 of those rolling on you is nice. Intimidate is your friend. And just backup with your other 4 chars if they are already facing the right way. It isn't for a fast get away, it is just to keep them from AOEing you or making you face the wrong way.
I am not an arena player, so sorry if you can't back up and see people that far away. I am mostly a BG player or world PVPer. I don't get to world PVP much, so I have to accept AV as my open world stuff. If you close on me from 80 yards to 10 to beat my face in, that is my bad. Either I was busy killing your friend and didn't watch or just got out played.
