I've love Microsoft Security Essentials, no regrets so far and it feels very lightweight. Haven't used AVG in a while so I can't say how it would compare.

Kaspersky labs takes the smallest amount of resources and is recommended for things like netbooks because of it. Plus they are just about giving it away at Best Buy, they give you one year for free for every one of their Geek squad services.

I've been using Avast! free version for years and I'm still happy with it. I've also heard good things about MSE.

    I'm using 'Webroot SecureAnywhere'.
    http://www.webroot.com/En_US/sites/l...iday-2012.html

The install was small enough to fit on a floppy.
It only uses 400K of system Ram and 0.01% of my CPU.

Unlike a traditional Anti-Virus, it doesn't have a definition file which it compares files with.
Rather it follows heuristic principles, basically checking if files follow behavior typical of a virus... such as a file trying to record your keystrokes, save your personal data, wanting to modify the registry, wanting to be started on boot-up, etc.
An average full system scan, takes my system 27 seconds.

I use Sunbelt Software Vipre , low resource usage and easy f/w configuration. Never any problems using it multiboxing or otherwise.
Just remember.... if it's free, you get what you pay for

Been using MSE here for a year or so after getting tired of AVG's false positive issues and growing...girth. Seems to work fine, though I haven't had anything even attempt to get through it yet so no idea how it does in an "oops" situation. Guy I worked with for years that does Microsoft OS stuff (with MSFT and HP) says it's about all he'll use anymore.
    Now playing: WoW (Garona)
