Microsoft Security Essentials is also free and it's arguably one of the best AV programs available.

Been using MSE here for a year or so after getting tired of AVG's false positive issues and growing...girth. Seems to work fine, though I haven't had anything even attempt to get through it yet so no idea how it does in an "oops" situation. Guy I worked with for years that does Microsoft OS stuff (with MSFT and HP) says it's about all he'll use anymore.

Microsoft Security Essentials. Set it and forget it. It just works.
