Any channel spell, or initiating melee combat (where the toon actually swings their weapon) will break auto follow.

As mentioned, you can use Jamba and set it to Strobe.
Either all the time, or after combat has ended.

I personally don't like Strobe, and opt for binding Follow to a mouse thumb button... which is easy to push, and after a session of play became rather automatic, not a hassle at all.
