Hi, Upgrading my Computer And need some help with compatability

So after my thread with people helping me figure out what i should upgrade so my computer could 10 box, plus 1 account auctioning, plus internet explorer etc.Ive found that i probably need to make sure that everything is compatable and that it will hold up to my needs.So im going to list what ive got and whats going to be upgraded and if you guys thinks theres a better option and or incompatability please help me out, since im horrible with building, fixing,upgrading computers.And once again Thank you for all your help for the last thread and this one.

Im still looking for one.Im not sure what size i should get.Because i dont turn my computer off often so booting up isnt a issue.Though i heard it helps the computer to put the OS on it so im not sure what to do.Aswell i use 2 WOW folders so im going to be needing around 250 GB+- a few gigs.So for now this will be empty tonight.

And thats it , im asking you guys because i do the utmost stupid decisions when it comes to building computers and since this is a good amount of money , that dosent come fast to me and took time to save up id really enjoy the best decisions and i know there a few Very knowledgable people in these forums who might come by this thread and throw a few pointers out.

I'm going to quote from another forum:

If I were shopping for high quality memory, I would use the following parameters as a guide...

* DDR3 rated at 1.5v or lower
* DDR3 rated at the lowest CAS I could afford
* DDR3 rated at the highest clock speed I could afford
* Limit the scope of my purchease to G.Skill, Mushkin, Corsair XMS or Crucial (non-Ballistix)

While not wavering on the voltage point, I would balance the other issues with my budget.

Remember my goal is not pure "benchmarking" performance, but simply finding the highest quality memory I can afford.

The only reason I pay a premium for low latency, high speed, low voltage memory is...
Quality and quality alone.

1.5v is the JEDEC DDR3 voltage standard.
Stay with 1.5v or less if you can afford it..

As for all that timing stuff, here's another quote (from the same thread) which might be a little difficult to understand if you're new to this:

Let's just do the math, the frequency is expressed in Hertz, which means "cycles per second". So, the DDR3 2133 will perform 2133 cycles a second while the DDR3 1600 will do, well, 1600. You, of course, know this.

Now the CAS latency is given in cycles. So, a CAS8 DIMM will take 8 cycles to respond and the CAS11, 11 cycles.


Now putting it all together - the DDR3 2133 CAS11 will take 11/2133 seconds, which is equal to 0.00516 seconds, to respond while the DDR3 1600 CAS 8 will take 8/1600, which is equal to 0,005 seconds, to respond. Thus, the 1600 DIMM is faster. For your dilemma, you're contemplating 0.000516 versus 0.00422 or timing difference of 0.00094 seconds! How fast are your reflexes and how long are you willing to wait for your memory to respond? Yes, I'm being an ass. You'll never ever see, feel or sense a difference.


You'll also want to carefully check the timings, since the higher the MHz the looser they are. I've seen 2133 DIMMS with 11-14-28-30, simply junk. As well as voltage, avoid anything higher than 1.5V. The only way many manufacturers get a respectable CAS at high MHz is to crank the voltage to 1.65V. Hence is why the 1.35V Samsung DIMMS are so smashing. Also, less DIMMs generally means less load to the memory controller. Therefore, 2x8GB is better than 4x4GB.

I ran 20 clients in Orgrimmar off of 16GB of RAM, so I don't see why you couldn't run 11 off of 16GB. You could always just buy another set of DIMMs from your Newegg link for $40 and be done with it, unless you really want 32GB of RAM.

You want the fastest single-GPU video card with the most RAM that you can afford. Any of the choices you've linked above should work perfectly fine. I'm not really a fan of the 6xx series, but I don't know if I'd recommend AMD either since I haven't owned one in a long time.

And last but not least a ssd.

It comes down to how much money you have to use for this upgrade. Do you want an SSD dedicated to your OS and your games? Do you want to split them up? Do you want them both on one big SSD? All I can say is... The larger the SSD, the better it performs (up to about 256GB).

Why are you not a fan of the 6XX series? The 680 is one if the best options for a boxer right now, if not the best.

Oh and get the new Plextor SSD, its pretty damn fast and the 256 only set me back $270

My thoughts (IMHO):

SSD - No point for games. Do you really care if you load an instance or area slightly faster? Once the place is loaded, who cares anymore, you need FPS at that point. Putting your OS and Pagefile on SSD is a HUGE performance increase. Your OS uses tons of tiny executables scattered across it. Your overall OS usage will be much snappier. Shoot for two SSDs - one for OS/Apps, one for the Pagefile. Put games, vids, pics, porn, whatever else, on spinning disks.

gtx 6xx - Good cards. Better than AMD thanks to the fact that ATI/AMD still does not have their shit together and Catalyst still sucks after all these years. Look for a card thas has more shaders and memory than your current one, to get a better increase in performance than you have now.

Memory - It's soooo cheap right now just get 32gb and be done with it. Again, high speed lower latency = $$$ but still very affordable. Really just aim for the higher speed big name memory sticks, don't worry about latency.

Oh and props for using IE and not ffx or chrome like the anti-M$ sheep. Good luck!

A lot of the enthusiast crowd is speculating that nVidia screwed its customers with the 6xx series. It is believed that the 680s were really supposed to be the 660s and that nVidia cut a lot of corners this time (low memory bandwidth, low ROPs, and a very minor increase in performance over the 5xx series despite a brand new architecture with a smaller, faster, and more efficient chip). Whether it was to make money or whether it was due to them not being prepared with the new 28nm chips is unknown and will most likely never be known.

nVidia also recently locked down voltage overclocking via both software and hardware, which technically made the MSI Lightning and the EVGA Classified not really worth their premium price. Both of these cards were re-designed with a custom PCB to allow for extreme overclocking at the premium price you pay for them, but now you can't do that.

However, I'm not here to derail this thread nor debate what I've said in the above paragraphs. If anyone has something argumentative to say on the matter, this is not the thread to discuss it. No one has to "buy in" to what I've said about the situation and I honestly don't care if you do or not. If anyone does want more information, there have been numerous megathreads about it on numerous hardware enthusiast forums (e.g. Anandtech).
