Thread: New Desk set up

  1. #1

    Default New Desk set up

I'm thinking two routes to go with this:

Reclining chair with monitors suspended above me.

    OR

Using a kneeling chair with my current set up.

Does anyone have any experience with either? I would really like to do the suspended set up, but I can't find anything on the net to do that. I remember this one company used to do the whole desk + chair made with steel tubing. The chair you picked from any car manufacturer (so you could have a porsche chair if you wanted.)

The kneeling chair was more trying to get my lower back stronger, but I'm not sure it would work for how long we play games. I tried one of those exercise balls and it sucked for any extended sitting.

    Thoughts?

I've been using a recliner at my office desk at home for about 2 years or more. Quite comfortable but I also have my monitors setting on the desk surface since I am about 1-2 feet away from the edge of the desk. I also have a board that sits comfortably in my lap/across the arms of the chair that my keyboard and mouse rest on. Just make sure you have some back / neck support or else you may end up leaning forward a bit much.

Are you noticing any numbness with your hands or arms? I'm worried that it might be uncomfortable after long periods of time. I was thinking of using ceiling mounts for my two 24" monitors and suspend them over head. Then I would need to find a chair that is good for reclining and had an area I could set the keyboard and mouse on. I'm not afraid to spend money on this setup, as long as it works

I've used those kneeling chairs and I'd definitely go test one in a store before I bought one. Personally, they make my knees hurt almost as bad as a severe low-pressure front.

This was the chair I was thinking, so if my knees got tired I could make it recline. With monitors on ceiling mounts I could reposition them if I needed to recline. It's all very preliminary in design and I'm not really sure in what direction Im taking it. The knee problem did occur to me as well.

Another idea is maybe a recumbent bicycle to get some more exercise during the day... but I've had so many back problems I'm not so sure that it would be a good idea.

No numbness here. I'm a pretty big guy, so most cheap office chairs are uncomfortable. We had this recliner that needs to be tossed or given away. Instant new office chair. I don't know about hanging the monitors from the ceiling, but I would recommend making sure your comfortable line of sight in the new chair be where you mount the monitors. I've thought about putting my 2 monitors on movable arms so that I can raise their height off the desk, but in testing it wasn't very comfortable. So make sure you're not straining anything or having to sit uncomfortably to view your monitors. One other thing, I'm pretty aware of my wrist posture (if that's even the correct word) in relation to my keyboard and board that my keyboard and mouse are on. This is probably why I don't have numbness. If you're prone to holding your wrists at odd angles you may want to make sure you've got a ergonomic wrist rests/etc.

I had thought of putting a very big TV sized screen up on the wall with two 32 inch monitors underneath with a recliner of some sort as a chair.

I really like the wow (not WoW) factor when people walk into my office and see my setup. Except that my current dual monitor setup isnt very impressive anymore, getting old I guess.

You all are giving me good things to daydream about, hopefully I can remodel my office again soon.

Ok Im trying the recumbent bicycle set up. I bought a new recumbent bike, but I'm having trouble finding some good monitor arms that will extend my monitors out from my desk and in front of the bike (which should be right next to my desk chair). Either they mount to the desk or the ceiling or side wall.

I was at the fairgrounds during an RV show and saw some pretty amazing TV setups. Coming down out of the ceiling or up from the floor at the push of a button.

That would be really sweet, however I have a remodel coming up next spring... so any change now would be temporary and I wouldn't want to put that kind of time into a setup. I found some arms on Amazon, but they are not ideal in that they only move the monitor around 24" and considering my desk is 18" deep it will only extend them 6" from the desk. Hmm.
