It doesn't say that their healing will be based on a percentage of the damage they deal.
Just that they will be in melee, doing melee damage, as they heal.

The two might be linked... but they might not be.

Mages in Rift heal by doing damage, so this might be where they got the idea. Also AoE looting was in Rift from day one.
