Default ATI and Nvidia in same machine?

Just 1 qeustion so I'll keep it short and sweet
Can I use an ATI 5870 and a NVidia 580 in the same machine? one for each monitor?
5870 for the slaves and the 580 for the main

I don't see why not but, what are you trying to do that the GTX 580 can't handle by itself?

Good qeustion the answer is nothing really, just a simple 5 box setup atm, was just a thought that came to mind.
But like you say not needed, I could just sell the 5870 and recoup abit of the cost of the 580

I would probably prefer to just use one manufacturer of a video card in my system in case of a possible conflict. The GTX 580 (even a 1.5GB model) can 5 box just fine.

It works fine, though there is little point unless you want to do Nvidia PhysX processing while running your screen/s on an ATI card, or you have more than 2 monitors of course.

I paired up a 4870 with a GTX 480 (main), it helped relieve some stress off the GTX 480 which ran hot anyway.

    7970 now
