Default TERA Online

Changed the title of the thread to reflect general conversation rather than pre-order information.

Other TERA thread has been redirected to this one.

For those of you who were/are interested in TERA Online, En Masse Entertainment recently
opened up pre-orders on their site:

Other e-tailers will be offering pre-orders soon as well.

A little background on the game itself...

First off, it's not a WoW killer... so don't even ask if it is. It is, however, a nice break for the
traditional "lock-on" targeting that we're so very used to. In TERA you can't actually "lock-on"
to any mob (with the exception of a few spells) and everything is based on you actually
aiming your attacks/spells/abilities with your mouse just like a first person shooter. This means
that you are basically unable to multibox this game and you'd be stuck to playing solo.

Crum and I have been playing the Korean retail version on and off for some time now (Souca
also got a taste of some of the starting area) and we casually (very casually) leveled our main
characters to the mid-30's and numerous alts into the teens. Even in Korean, where we had to
figure things out and struggle through text that we couldn't understand, we still had fun because
the game itself looks amazing with its wide open environments, the fights are fast-paced and
movement intensive, and the plethora of scantily clad women scattered throughout the
land
it was nice to have a break from your typical WoW/RIFT MMO structure. Don't
misunderstand when I say it has a different "structure"... there are still the same kill this and
collect that quests that you should normally expect in any MMO but, the game just has a
different feel to it.

Do note that it is a Korean MMO so it does have that Korean 'feel' to it. If you've played any
other Asian MMO then you know what I'm talking about; however, it's not a grindfest like you
would normally find in an Eastern MMO (at least up until the mid-30's). Leveling with 2 people
made things go much faster than leveling solo (obviously) but we constantly found ourselves
moving out of a zone before we were completely done with all of its quests.

If you've been watching this game for some time now... here's your chance to finally get this bad
boy pre-ordered. If you're just hearing about this game from me here today, I would say the
game definitely deserves a shot.

Here are two videos that I made since Crum and I have been playing to maybe give you a look at
what you might see.

I played the Mystic, which is the jack-of-all-trades in the game, and I will say the action-mmo element is a bit of a culture shock but feels very natural after a while. And after playing for a while you go back to traditional lock on targeting and mouse cursor will feel so... wrong. Standard attacks have to be aimed, and other abilities you need to lock on which is as simple as moving the reticle over the enemy/friendly quickly and pressing the hotkey again to launch it.

It will take some time to get used to, but the time will be well worth it. This is probably the best MMO I have ever played... and I can't even read anything it says haha.

Haha. It really does make the the lock-on targeting system feel lazy after you've played something like TERA.

On a related note, I'm very curious to see how it does with regards to gold sellers/farmers considering their regional IP blocking.

http://tera-support.enmasse.com/app/...etail/a_id/153

En Masse will block IPs based on region. Asia, Africa, Russia, and the Middle East are included on the block list. While we appreciate that there are players in these regions who would enjoy playing on En Masse servers, it's unfortunate that the vast majority of Internet traffic we see from these regions are from cyber-criminals relating to account theft, gold-farming and other hacking behavior.
Fascinating.

You could always use a VPN to connect to the U.S. servers from Korea which is exactly what
any gold farming service is going to do to bypass that useless IP ban. By no means am I putting
you on the level of gold farmers but, being an American who just happens to be overseas I
wouldn't feel bad for bypassing this restriction one bit. While I won't argue that it's against the
rules to evade the IP ban (and I take no responsibility for any action taken against anyone's
account for doing so), I will argue the ethics behind doing so because you're going to, in no
way, affect the game in a negative way (compared to the reasons stated in that IP ban article).
I used a VPN to connect to the Korean servers when I first started playing almost a year ago
but, I soon realized there was no actual restriction for U.S. IPs on Korean servers and people
(US/EU) actually speak English right in General chat looking for DPS/Tank/Healer for dungeons
and what not.

Had no idea TotalBiscuit played this one at Gamescon back months ago. Another quick look
and maybe some more insight for those who are interested.
