Thread: Power shortage?

  1. #1

    Default Power shortage?

I am running a 955 BE non OC, a XFX 6970, 8G ram (4sticks) a Vertex2 OCZ SSD (wow only) 2 HDD 500G (7200 rpm) each, and all powered by a CM 620W real power.

I'm worried that the pcu may be just a bit to weak for this set-up as I get some random system shutdowns lately. Max usage of the GCU is apparently 321W and that of the CPU 265W so thats for those 2 586W allready. Would a 7 or 800W unit be the better option or should the 620W be able to cope?

Right here on your GPU's specs it recommends a 650W PSU. That recommendation is system wide not for the
    GPU itself.

And... where do you see that your processor sucks up 265W?

It's 250W under load according to some reviews

When you see power load benchmarks... it's system wide. You can't just measure the CPU wattage with a
    DMM.

EDIT: Your CPU has a 125W TDP which means that's the average amount of wattage it will pull when running
"real applications." Unless you've OC'd your CPU and it's pegged at 100% usage I highly doubt you're pulling
    250W out of it.

Thanks for your input Fenril, gonna change the pcu anyways as it's making a hell of a lot of noise. Prob something wrong with it. Will order a Seasonic 760W as its very well in reviews and is one of the most silent ones

Seasonic is definitely a good choice. Hopefully that is the cause of your problem.
