As you guys know tons of stuff about pc's an' all I would like to know. I wrecked my Linksys wag160 modem and took an old one I had in a box somewhere (Sitecom WL-118). I want a new and possibly much better new one. What would be a very good modem/router?

I do not have any modem I can suggest, I am still using an old motarola modem:P

But you should check with your ISP first to see what type of modems they support, hate to see you buy a modem and find out your ISP does not support the modem or its features.

This is your best advice.

My very good friend works for the cable company. Whether its DSL, Cable, Wired, Wireless, 24K or 160K... they're all crap. Even the most expensive cable modems out for public purchase have the same warranty as the el'cheap-o's. The number 1 killer of modems is heat. And how many modems do you see that have fans?? Only the commercial ones for rack systems.
Im in total agreement with burningforce. Call your ISP.

And while heat may be the number 1 killer of modems, keep in mind most people just cram them somewhere with little to no ventilation.

Right, call your ISP. They'll make you rent one of their modems, which could arguably be better at a lower initial cost. It could also be worse.

Are there any specific features you want? Do you feel like you're being limited by it in some way? Are you not getting your advertised speed/bandwidth? If the answer to all of these is "no", don't worry about it until it dies.

Hes right. Same said Cable company employee does have "horror" stories of people putting tin foil on their equipment to keep the government from spying on them, or electronic equipment buried under magazines or cats... ya, cats. Modems are just poorly designed. If youve scraped one out of the closet from times past, its definitely not going to hurt to ask about a newer model, then shove the old n trusty back into the closet.

Once Mike told me he entered a home where the homeowner was so concerned for dust, he made a hanging system from the ceiling, comprised of wire coat hangers stretched out, and hooking on the bottom of wood or cardboard... thinking he was avoiding the dust in the room.

well I understand getting the runaround and having the ISP try and get you to buy "their" stuff, but the only way to be sure you get a compatible modem is to go through the ISP.

If you do not want to talk to the ISP, usually most ISP have a website that has faq's and troubleshooting guides tell you what type of modem you may need. But if I ma not mistaken most, if not all, modems should work. Just make sure you get a dsl modem if you have dsl and cable modem if you have cable internet.

as for a router, that depends on what you do with your computer. If you use bittorrent a lot and also game a lot, then you would want something with very good Simultaneous Throughput. this way the router does not crash because it can not handle all of the packets being sent.

And am I wrong in thinking a modem is a modem? I'm using a piece of crap from my ISP which works a treat at 15meg/s (I'm in countryside in UK so getting those speeds is miraculous).

The only thing I'll add is my ISP (SKY) "hides" the broadband username and password, which basically means you need to download a tool to decypher it. So maybe check on that too.

Thanks for the tips, gonna call the ISP and see if I can get a new modem from them. Apparently my onboard LAN connection died aswell, so I installed a PCI LAN card and that fixed that. Now my system started to shutdown randomly and start-up no problems. Logs say it's a kernel 41 (63) prob but sofar I found nothing that couls solve that issue The shutdowns don't appear to often but 3 times last night is allready to much for me

Nah, I'm not like that. I just think you're a bit of an idiot at times, but that could have more than one root...cause. I'm a rather jaded individual on some things. I'm a judgmental asshole, I admit it. At least you don't carry on like Sam Deathwalker.

Green is fine, I just see no point in having all of your posts in green, or bold, or whatnot. As far as I'm concerned a modem is just a modem, and if it's working fine and you're getting advertised bandwidth keep on using it.

SKY - Believe in better - Riiiiiiiiight. Never trust telecom.

You could always try and do what I do when the weather gets bad out here in the middle of nowhere.

Hum,Whistle, and Click into a paper cup. I've tried to convert smoke signals to digital, but have a long ways to go.
