    Default (OT) soldering advice.

A few questions if you please.

I have a Westinghouse monitor that I'll be needing to change out capacitors soon, So I'm wondering about a good cheap desoldering pump, and curious to know if Weller is still the choice on an Iron in the 15-30 watt range.

So I bow once again to your experience here guys. Only 8 capacitors that I can tell. But with the No Signal input unless the LCD runs awhile , and then I reboot, I figure it will be easy surgery.

The last time I had to solder anything on a circuit board, was the Video chips on the old C64's.

    Thanks,

    Stephen

Caps are pretty easy just make sure your iron is properly tinned (covered in solder) and they will just fall out. I don't even bother with an desoldering iron anymore, I just reheat the solder for re-entry. If you have a heat gun you can make the joints look professional by heating the board to 375+. And when you are finished and then clean all the joints with some alcohol and a toothbrush.

Awesome, thanks for the advice there Maleick.

I figure I have some old 386 MB's that I can practice on before I do the real job. I used to be the goto guy with soldering, but that was so many years ago.

You can use that wick thing that sucks up solder also instead of the suction gun.

LOL, I actually did that out here at the ranch with some old Tube TV's about 5 years ago. That and an old Monty Carlo, invited a bunch of friends and law enforcement out for a Machine gun day. That was a blast to say the least.
