For a first timer, I'd definitely recommend at least 3 Shaman. Probably one of the easiest teams I've ran to date is 2x Paladin (1 tank, 1 heals) and 3x Elemental Shaman.

No RAF is not a big deal. If you've had RAF before then it might be but just starting out its very quick and easy now adays.

I started my DK team this weekend after watching them tear through content/people. I must say its probably my favorite team at the moment.

For RAF to apply, you need:
    a) The toon is grouped with another whose account is directly linked (A > B or C > D).
    b) They are within a fairly small distance of each other.
    c) The characters are within +/- 4 levels of each other.
    d) The mob killed or quest completed is not greyed out for either.
    e) The characters are level 59 or lower.

If you're boosting with an existing toon on A.
    And are linked A > B > C > D > E
    With new toons on BCDE.
Even though the A > B link is not valid because A is over 59th and A is more than four levels higher than B...
You still get RAF on B, because the B > C link (and the C > D and D > E links too) are all valid.

An even number of toons boosted is probably best.
If you level four toons on BCDE (or ABCDE).
B has gained four level 60 characters (or even higher than 60).
Which means each of the four can give 30 free levels to characters on A, who are lower level than they are.
Which adds up to essentially two free characters on A.
Ditto with C giving two toons to B, and D giving two to C, and E giving two to D.
Unfortunately E doesn't get any free toons.

Plus because D received two level 60 toons (level granted from E.)...
They can give C an extra level 60.
C can similarly give B an extra 60.
And B can give A another level 60.
The levels cascade; you can give granted levels based on granted levels received.

If A were a booster (a level 80/85 toon), they'd still get several free toons despite not leveling any toons on the parent/initial/boosting account.

If you want to maximize your granted levels...
For every hop in the chain, you need to boost/level an exponential number of toons.
    One hop = 2^1 (2) toons.
    Two hops = 2^2 (4) toons.
    Three hops = 2^3 (8) toons.

Even though you're not going to have all the granted levels cascade into full toons, with no granted levels left over.
If you're starting... which you are.
The A > B > C > D > E chain is still ideal (with 4 links/hops), because you level toons on all the accounts, and get levels granted on all the accounts.
And really you want a bunch of options, that is what RAF gets you.

Edit: Ok Ualaa had posted before I saw it. LOL anyway heres my interpretation.

Call blizzard and tell them its not working the way it should. Make sure you have in your chat window your xp gained (could be on a seperate XP tab, just create a new tab to do this). They will help you. Them linking the accounts together isn't the way they fixed mine, so not sure how long it would take effect once they linked it, should be immediate. They should have killed the current accounts and gave you new keys, tell them thats what someone you know did, so they might fix it that way for you.

    Boosting levels works like this:

    Account A - Linked - Account B - Linked Account C - Linked Account D - Account E

You cannot grant levels beyond the level of the toon that is granting the levels up to a maximum of level 60.

Example is given of if one team of all level 60 characters quested, ran dungeons, or leveled up in PVP, would grant levels in a chain down through each account.
    • Account E grants 30 levels from the toon that hit level 60, to account D. (Account E Has 30 grantable levels)
    • Account D grants 45 levels from the toon that hit level 60, to account C. (Account D Has 30 grantable levels, plus 15 gained from the boosted toon)
    • Account C grants 52.5 levels from the toon that hit level 60, to account B. (Account C Has 30 grantable levels, plus 22.5 gained from the boosted toon)
    • Account B grants 56.25 levels from the toon that hit level 60, to account A. (Account B Has 30 grantable levels, plus 26.25 gained from the boosted toon)

Note that levels granted are always rounded down. And that each level you gain, that includes from being boosted by RAF level granting, will enable the leveled up toon to then gain half of gained levels as granted level credit to the RAF recruiter.

Basically Big brother account gets rewards from Little brother account, but only half of which little brother gained.

Hope that makes sense, had to do the math in my head to make it somewhat ledge-able.
