I had originally intended to follow the "Live and let live" mantra, and didn't touch anyone till around level 39. I pretty much let alliance be, and even helped a few with quests. Then I got camped by a duo for a while in Thousand Needles. It wasn't even a duo of 70s, they were around 55 but would not let me be. I said "Oh well, it's a pvp server" and logged out for an hour.
However, since then I've followed the fight or flight rule. If I can kill them, they're gone, and they don't get to be in my area until I'm done there unless they bring bigger firepower to take me on. If I can't kill them, I move on and occupy myself elsewhere. This doesn't upset me, as it's what I rolled on a pvp server for: it's like being an animal, people actually stake claims to territory and fight trespassers off. If I ever get tired of it, I can always relog to my pve server.
