LF: Software to minitor bandowith usage

Hello all,

For couple of days now I have been trying to find a program that will log my Internet bandwidth usage, yet I had no success so what I did was write down the byte of my correct sent\recive do w\e i do and before I turn off the pc write down the new vales, and then [correct] - [previews] = [real], [real]/1024 = real as KB, [real]/1024 = real as MB and then know how much I use, yet while apparently effective method it is pain and I am also not sure that my numbers are right, there for I come to you requesting real program that do track one pc's bandwidth use.


As for why: I'm during the majority of the week can be found outdoor in mdl of no man's land, no meter of desert of monition area its plain simple, i got power generator(+solar power ftw) and reception of cellphone but no other evidence of civilization, then again there is that laptop that I have :P, so I made some calls to the cellphone company (Orange) and apparently you can use a phone as Internet modem (2.8mbps download\333kpbs upload) but here is the catch, they charge you by how much bandwidth you use, you can go for "packages" of size, like its:
100mb - 58nis
200mb 81nis
1gb 198nis
12gb 288nis

now I just wish to know just how much bandwidth do i use so I know what should I get, if you wonder why all this outdoorish life, I'm serving the ISR army atm and well I do have my brakes\off hrs in which I could do some relaxing things like... daily quest :P

MRTG should be able to help you out...


Bare in mind that this is only for the technically minded as you will have to configure dumps of perflogs to be parsed by MRTG.

tbh there are many different ways of doing this but no free out off the shelf solutions spring to mind

Know any not free software that I could posibly buy for small fee ? (from hopfuly known compeny)

not saying I willl but I would love to take a closer look at what my money could grant me.

edit: looking at MRTG site and install instractions, its not beyon me.. i could, wouldnt say easly, but could mandage working with it, yet befor I go down that road I wish to find out if it can do the one thing i want: Count how much trafic I use in total from when I start it to when i finish it (or well its logging),

what im saying is that its like speed metter insted of mile counter and im only intersted in the laiter, get me?

oki here is some quick report, after just bit over 1hr of av (40v40 man, figured that will give highest trafic rates) it comes down to betwen 15 to 20mb of bandowith (upload+download), the actual speed metter reads ware at the max 9kbps upload and 30kpbs download

so, i can stick with my phone and not get better or\native modem (as my phone is 3rd generation it is limited to 333kbps\64kpbs wich is overkill =p, modems are 3.5generations, some phones such as nokia n95 are also 3.5generation and they are limited to ether 3.8mb\333kpbs or 7mb\2mb depending on there hardware, modems typicaly are the first option while phones at there majorty are the laiter however the network here is limited to 2.8mb\333k)

now it comes down to just how much will I actually use it, asuming 3wknds at army and say the imgniable 15hr\day during friday\satarday and up to say 4hr\day during the week, in real life it will be much less) you can come up with 8wknd days and 18 normal days (2days @ home are out of the calc) so its (15*8)+(4*18)=192hr\month say i some how get to 22mb\hr thats 4224mb, unforntly after 1gb of usege the next avilable deal is for 12gb wich is infact overkill and also rather expnsive (compring to the other deals) then again, if wow will only consume 1\3 of my bandowith i could utilize the rest of it for other things wich is never bad.

now it just comes down to thinking wheter or not im really wanting to doing this =p

many thanks all =) and i totaly recommend netstat live for any one who is into this sort of information, btw, if any one else could play some with this program and tell me his bandowith\hr after some wow sessions it will be lovly, imo it will be around the same if not lower but could be nice to know for sure.
