    Default Windows 7 Upgrade Advice

I have Vista 64 bit and plan to upgrade with Windows 7. My pc is currently running on two raid 0 650gig drives. I just purchased a OCZ SSD and plan on installing Windows 7 and Warcraft on it. Can you guys tell me the best way to go about upgrading this system with the least hassle? I would like to keep all my current programs that are loaded on the pc currently. One thing I may have a problem with is the raid 0 drives. I don't think I can plug in the ssd on another sata connection without it conflicting with the raid 0 setup. Thanks guys!

hmmm I don't think you will have an issue with the raid0 setup with the ssd. usually you have to elect the drive to be a raid member in the raid configuration tool. as far as the os is concerned, as long as it is not a windows software raid, it will do just fine.

i have always been a purists on loading a os from scratch and i would encourage to give your SSD the same treatment. As farr as your other programs, I would do custom install them on your raid 0 drives instead of the default drive, wich would be the OCZ hardware. Also, change your home directory location to somewhere on your raid.

GL with your new install and migration otherwise :P

I would also recommend installing the OS fresh, especially since you'll be using an SSD.
I've done it both ways and I've had WAY less problems afterward with a clean install.

    1) install Win7 easy transfer on your vista box (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...-easy-transfer)
    2) Use WET to backup everything
    3) Copy your important docs, downloaded software app installers, WoW folder, etc. to a separate backup drive*
    4) Install Win7 on the new RAID
    5) Install all the same apps on Win7
    6) Run WET on Win7 and restore what you backed up in step 2.

Note that there are some issues with WET getting everything. http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2348168,00.asp

    Hope that helps.

    * I would also backup your c:\users\<yourusername>\ folder in its entirety just in case.

I plan on installing windows and wow to my 120g ssd drive and then using the raid 0 2x 650gig drives as data. Do I need to setup anything special if I install win 7 on the ssd then setup then plug in the raid 0 drives back into the motherboard?

As long as you don't change SATA ports on your RAID drives and your SSD goes into a port before your RAID drives*, you shouldn't need to change anything.

    * If you change ports on the raid, your motherboard probably won't configure them correctly without some adjustment. If you have your RAID in SATA0/1 now and you install Win7 on the SSD on SATA2, when you plug the RAID back into SATA0/1 it will change the device/partition index which may cause windows boot failures. This should be recoverable with the Win7 recovery console but figured I'd warn you to anticipate the possibility.

So how do I fix that with the recovery? This is my biggest fear of doing the upgrade.
