I've been soloing my hunter for the past couple months now, but have come up with some good rotations with him for BM and Surv. Grab pets with good special debuffs with low cooldown timers on them like the fox, bear, and worm. These will be my three main pets when I resume my dps squad cause the duration on them last longer than the cooldowns, so it's pretty much up on mobs all the time. The following is a straight copy of my macro-cache file from my WoW WTF folder. They can be used for anything you like, so take from it what you want. My main spam button for single target is the one on top that I use on a number of my toons for /click macros.
/click spam macro on E button:
/click BT4Button5
/click BT4Button6
/click BT4Button7
/click BT4Button8
/click BT4Button9
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear(); UIErrorsFrame:Show()
My button layout for Survival /clicks:
Single targets:
5 - /castsequence reset=target/combat Hunter's Mark,Serpent Sting,null
6 - /petattack
/castsequence Cobra Shot,Cobra Shot,Cobra Shot
/petautocastoff [group] Growl
/petautocaston [nogroup] Growl
7 - Explosive Shot spell, no macro for this
8 - Kill Shot spell, no macro
Surv mob spam button:
On my 1 button:
/petattack
/castsequence reset=5/combat Serpent Sting, Cobra Shot, Cobra Shot, Cobra Shot,Cobra Shot, Cobra Shot, Cobra Shot, Cobra Shot, Cobra Shot, Cobra Shot,
/cast Multi-Shot
/click BT4Button8
BT4Button9 usually has my cooldowns on it, but I recently swapped that to another button to just mouseclick
Black Arrow spell is on button 3 to apply when needed, and 2 has the /cast [@mouseover] Kill Shot macro. Q is the Misdirection macro, glyphing this is highly recommended. I don't even set the tank to my focus anymore and constantly keep this on my pets when soloing. They never draw enough aggro to have the boss/mobs come after me cause they're always on top of the tank, so his/her damage draws it back onto him/her. In the unlikely chance I do pull too much, there's always the Feign Death I can cast.
The Mend Pet macro can help you manage the time on it a little better, does me once in a while, but I also run Healbot on my hunter for this instead now.
Once your hunters reach 70+, grab 2 pieces for of the Tier 5 set to get the set bonus for it. It grants you the ability to heal your bet for 15% of the damage YOU do, not your pet. Survival is ideal, unless MM is now putting out more damage, to wear this set for. Surv spec, more damage is done by you than your pet, BM, it's the pet vs you, and MM is in between the two. For the set pieces, I'd highly suggest the chest and shoulders since they have the most gem slots. You can put the highest craftable gems from LK in these, not Cata cause of the iLvl restrictions. I've seen people soloing in Cata zones in this gear farming mobs. The Mend Pet spell is better now than before, but can't hold a candle to this set bonus healing.
I haven't played MM since 3.5, so I don't know how they are now, maybe someone else can post on that. I do know that all three specs way down the tier offer buffs to your raid/party, so one of each is viable. I ran 1 MM and 2 BM back then, Surv wasn't that great then for pve and I liked the exotic pets they could use. Next time, I'll run one of each for the buffs.
http://wow-petopia.com/ has some real good info on what pets to use for each group mockup, and Pick a Pet, and Raid Checklist, both from Curse.com are some handy addons to use also to know what buffs you're missin from the group/raid.
