Are battlegroups all the same now? I mean do you play all US servers in 5v5 or is it still based on battlegrounds?

I believe rated BG's and Arena use the battlegroups.
But normal BG's are pooled with all players in the US or all players in the EU.

Only arena uses the battlegroups, bgs and rbgs are pooled with all realms even cross language like in the eu a team from a german server could also play vs french/spanish server, but there is still no merge between us and eu
