New beginning...

Hey guys,

Due to massive lag and problems between O2 and WoW, I've decided to take a break and am taking a look at Eve.

The 14-day trial is downloading as I type, so basically i'm just after a few pointers.

I will be solo-boxing for the first 14 days to see if I like the game (played it a few years back, but can't really remember anything about it ), and was wondering what sort of toon to make to make the initial grind manageable.

I've read all the starter guides I can find about skill progressions etc, but these seem to require me to have funds already in the bank and as a new starter this doesn't seem the best way to go.

I've decideded on a Caldari pilot and from there i'm stuck....

Do I train him up to be a fighter pilot, to gain ISK from missions before levelling the 'learning' skills or do I go mining?

This will be my main toon if I like the game and will probably get another 4+ accounts later as dedicated professions

Seems like a major learning curve to start a game, but am looking forward to the challenges ahead. With a little friendly help of course

Eve seems very complex so far and after dumbing it down for WoW I can see it being a challenge.

The biggest challenge (IMO) of Eve Online, especially for somebody coming from WoW as their main MMO experience, is the complete and utter lack of hand holding.

Youll get out of it whatever you put into it. Hope you have fun!

As far as new starters, when you make a new char now, you get very little starter skills, but you have double SP learning untill 1.6 million SP, so the initial learning is rather quick to a set profession. They have removed learning skills from the game now as well, so any guide you read that says to learn them ASAP is outdated.

There are a few starter professions you can look into at the start, depending on your play style, mentality and whatnot.

Firstly there is the basic building blocks of all of EVE, and thats mining. This means fitting mining lasers to your ship, finding asteroids and mining, very simple start but can be seen as the biggest grind of all professions.

This leads to manufacturing, turning refined ore into minerals and building modules and items. This can be very good income if you are not that active, although to really cut it there is a fair bit of work needed, and some starting capital is usually needed.

Then there is missions, and with the increased initial learning speed getting into a mission ready ship can be done very easily. Caldari have whats considered the best mission ships as a general rule of thumb. Going from kestrel to caracal to drake to raven ect ect ect, there is good progression up the ladder without too much cross training.

There is also ratting, or killing belt rats for their bountys, but at lower levels the bountys are really rather small and you will make better isk doing missions.

PVP as an income isnt really viable unless you know what your doing, and have the SP to back it up. Not recommended as a starting profession.

You can also be a salvager, either professional or ninja. Both can net some very good income very quickly, and are considered pick up and play professions in terms of skillpoints needed to be invested. Do note that ninja salvaging while the better income of the 2 is considered griefing by many players ( although not by CCP) and you wont make many friends doing so.

There is trading also, although the gains you make as a start up pilot with minimal investment potential are small.

There are ofc many other professions in eve, and these are only very brief overviews of some. If you need any other info there are many players here who are able to help, or you can PM me directly and I can answer as best I can.

They removed the boost to new character training when they yanked the learning skills.

oh did they? my mistake its been a while since I made a new toon. I was aware of them removing learning skills and instead giving all players the +10 to all attributes ( unre-mappable) but I thought they kept the bonus to give new players something to work from. still with the relatively small requirements needed for level 1 missions my comment about it being a good entry profession for new players still stands

Joining a PVP corporation and being their butt monkey is another way to progress early on in EVE if you have no funds It's like joining an internet biking gang though soi be prepared to be told exactly what to do and go through some very tedious training.

Most people simply sell a PLEX to gain an initial stake of cash. There are lots of ways to earn ISK and the goal of many players is to 'play for free' by earning enough ISK in game to pay for their game time via PLEX.

Just bought 2 PLEX to sell, should give me initial starter funds em. Just progressing through the tutorials at the moment, doing them all to get a bit of understanding between reading 'Industrial Sized Knowledge' guide from internet.
