Default XP reward from quest not being converted to gold at level 85?

Since the cata release, I've seen this work sometimes, and not others.. I'm not sure if it's designed this way on purpose for some quests or it's a bug.

Basically I'm trying the Crucible of Carnage quests (ring-of-blood for cata). I get to the Earl of Evisceration and I check the quest reward for killing him. It's about 28 gold and 115,000 xp. Now I look at one of the guys in my party who's already 85 and the reward is simply 28g. Shouldn't that 115,000 exp be converted to some additional gold reward since I'm at the level cap? This is most of the reason I leveled my guys in rest xp, since i planned on doing the quests anyways.. I wanted that extra gold for being level capped at the end.

Follow up: I just did another normal quest. XP Capped guy got 13g, other guy got 9g + 60k exp. As would be expected. Confusing.

I get the impression that the conversion of xp to gold is much smaller now (not counting the issue you described, where it was zero). WotLK level 80 dailies netted 13 gold and 23 silver. Cata dailies seem to give 10 gold and 46 silver, aside from some quests that reward 9 gold and 40 silver (the cooking/fishing quests in Org, for example). This doesn't bother me much because you wind up with a pretty big pile of gold by 85 from questing. But it does seem as if they dialed it back a bit.

Killing maximum level mobs, gets a lot more gold (including vendor trash) than the maximum level mobs in WotLK.
That might be part of the "pile of gold" for leveling to 85th.

The AH is still heavily inflated, on my server.
Not as bad as the opening little bit.
But still, it must suck for those who came in without much savings, and see the entry level epics selling for 75k, when Titansteel went for 10k in WotLK.

It feels as if quest lines are shorter and reward more gold and sellable items. Most quest lines take the form of:

Phase one: two or three quests. Kill X. Collect item X off ground. Collect drop X from mobs.
Phase two: two or three quests, more of the same.
    Phase three: kill named NPC.
Phase four: visit the next NPC and repeat phases one through four.

The quests reward anywhere from around 8 gold to as much as... 36? And about half of them reward a piece of gear that will sell for 3-30 gold or replace a piece of gear that sells for that much. And like you mentioned, the sellable drops generate a bunch of gold too.

When my hunter was three or four bubbles from 85, she had around 3,600 gold and I figured that she'd hit 85 with about 4,000 gold. One bubble later she had 4,400 gold from quests in Deepholm. When she dinged 85 she had 5,100 gold. All from questing. No dailies, no dungeon runs, no AH sales. Just quests. I'm not complaining, mind you. But it's pretty crazy.

Edit to add: I do think that one reason for it is that it will provide the gold that players need in order to afford the 310% flight speed. Not an issue for me, but for lots of players it's a matter of convenience or keep-up-with-the-jonses type mentality. It did make it easy to spend around 300 gold to get over a bad hump in leveling LW, since I know that the character in question will be rolling in gold when she's done with the leveling grind...
