I used dailies, with three teams.. just under an hour on one team, and closer to three hours (total) for the other two teams, to fund my alchemy learning. Could do an alchemist every two days, with that. My route earnt 1,100 to 1,150 gold, depending on drops.... so in the 3,300 to 3,450 range a day.

Dailies were incredibly boring, and as gold from transmutes started to come in, I dropped down to two teams doing dailies and then one team after a while.

Gold is a challenge, to see how much you can make.

And I agree, permanent things are probably the best to purchase, especially trade skills or riding skills. But gear is worthwhile too, because even if it is only a tier or whatever... it is good for 3-6 months of play at least. And you'll make a lot more than you spent in that time for the next set of gear or whatever.

seems to me making gold is just another minigame inside WoW. Just like collecting pets, mounts, achievements or even just deciding to do all the quests in the game.
Some love playing those minigames, some not as much, and only do it enough to go by.
