Default disconnects - is it router, isp, or blizzard?

    hello all

ever since patch 4.0 was released to live servers, I have been getting frequent lag and disconnects on my characters. It is just weird when it happens because i am playing fine then all of a sudden I get a lag spike then eventually I get disconnected on 1 to 4 accounts. Not all accounts get disconnected, but sometimes they do.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem or is it an error on my end?

    Here is my modem, isp

linksys WRT54GL router - flashed with DD-WRT firmware (tried tomato as well)
I live in Harvard illinois and am using Charter cable as my ISP.

So if someone can shed some light on this, I would be thankful

Cable modem....ewwww. I feel for ya.

Something I would do is this (if you're running windows):
    • Open a DOS box (command console)
    • Run the following command: ipconfig /all
    • Look in the output of that command for your "Default Gateway" under your local area connection
    • Using the IP address for your default gateway, type in the following command: ping -t <111.111.111.111>
    • (note: replace 111.111.111.111 with the IP of your default gateway)
    • Then play wow normally.
    • Watch the ping window when you notice disconnects. If you see a string of "Request timed out." messages, then your connection to the cable modem network is dying, which is causing your disconnects. This will require you to wrangle your cable modem provider into figuring out where your problem is on their network.
    • If you see no issues with that, then repeat the ping -t command to somewhere like google.com or microsoft.com and see if that reports any timeouts when you get disconnected. If not, then basic internet traffic is getting out OK. If it dies here but not when pinging your default gateway, then your ISP has issues and needs to get off the dime.

If you don't see any lost packets (Request timed out) then your internet connection is probably fine and it's either server-side or your PC is screwing up on you. In this case, you'll have to dig a bit deeper.

    thanks for the info guys
    ughmahedhurtz will try this soon.

though it seems to me this might just be isp related, at least for me. I was listening to streaming music through winamp and boxing, then all of a sudden the music started buffering and I lagged then got disconnected from 2 WoW sessions out of 4.

having the disconnect problem around the release of 4.0 just might be a fluke for me. My isp tends to oversell nodes and mine might be at max capacity which will explain the problems from 12pm-9pm

if I find something out, I will post here

I've been getting lots of lag and disconnects too. I did some research and tons of folks are on the same boat.

It appears bli change its netcode to help on bandwidth cost. I think how it works is their now p2p . Since the patch I have notice 2 new ports that blizzards using. Both loading equal amount this is where the latency is coming from I think.

There is a lot of pist of people from this, so perhaps they made fix it soon.

Got some links describing these new ports that everyone is having problems with?

Blizzard has indeed made it so the p2p downloading goes on in the background regardless of if you want it to or not. Me and my friend just finished building a router based on pfsense because we were getting flaky results with the QoS on our DD-WRT linksys router.

I should have worded it differently, but i normally watch my connections and ports and blizzard since the patch is using more then usual. And with lag, we all notice a slight decrease over a solo account user...

The lag is odd, it comes and goes. Go visit bliz tech support forums, tons of stuff I have seen on there. I'm no networking expert, but you get an idea of what is going on....

    @Sbrowne55

Can you list what new ports blizzard is using? I did not see anything listed at the blizz information site about it. I want to add these ports to the router and see if this helps.

    thanks
