Who says the ceiling cap for rested exp is 80 for a level 79 character?

Rested for max level is wiped out above level cap when max level is.

This occurs for people that have levels caps at 60 that don't upgrade to tbc as well.

This also occurs with the trial came that has its level cap.

Rested in the UI and api calls keeps going to its theoretical max no matter what the level cap is. Even when the xp ranges are unknown it still marches on.

My guess is that you get rested xp *up to max level*
a level 79.5 will have 0.5level of rested xp max.
a level 80 will have 0 rested xp.
This is my understanding.

Not sure how they could calculate the rested xp anyway, as the current xp shown for level 80 has nothing to do with what you'll have to go through when cata comes. I guess they could do a % and grant the rested xp proportionaly, but my guess is that you won't be able to.

in any case, try it and tell us how it goes :-)
If you're right you'll get 1.5 level of rested, if not .. well, you'll have to kill a couple mobs to get to 80 first hehe

i think you will find it is restricted to only 1 level of xp and thats to 80, you would have to rest after cata to benifit the 2 levels of rest like normal.

im sure this is the case, there is no secret extra level of rest because your 79, its set to 80 and no more rested will exceed this until the release or upgrade etc.

Well at any rate, even I won;t take my advice because I want to play level 80 content for fun for a few weeks on my melee team.

If you are planning on leveling to 80 and just letting the team sit until Cata though, give what I suggested a try, it might just work pretty well.

I think you have with lvl 80 1,5 xp bonus like in every addon

you cant see it now, but you get it and when cata is ready you got the full 1,5 bonus

I think in support of this theory is the fact that the level 80 XP bars are now showing how much you have, out of how much it takes to get to 81. I never saw that before the patch. So maybe it is actually calculating and storing that rested.
If not, stopping at 79.9 means he's only like 1 quest turn-in away from 80 and being where everyone else is. Good risk versus reward.

Oh btw, make sure you have a full questlog with completed quests when cata hits. Going to take you 10 minutes to fly around in northrend and turn in all the quests. Will net you about 500k xp and gives you a nice headstart. At least I have plenty of quests left to complete in icecrown / stormpeaks, not to mention the dailies.

dailies gave shit exp when Wotlk hit for tbc dailies. So dailies is prob not a good bet.
