Thread: 460 gtx

    Default 460 gtx

My 280 GTX died on me and after reading many reviews it seem liked the GTX 460 1GB card was a slight upgrade to my 280 in terms of performance. On single games this seems very true. But the card is screaming when i fire up3+ WoWs. And i mean as in it sounds likes its about to take off! The fan is in hyper drive rofl.

Was wondering if anyone else is using this card to 5box? I am thinking about laying down the extra money for a 470 or a 480. The 460 was billed as being a silent card, but the fan always on high makes it way loader than my 280GTX was . the 280 ran as many as 10 WoWs for almost 2 years and never got that loud!

Have you looked into Riva tunner or w/e the app is that lets you tweak the fan speeds? I had to weak my 8800GTS a few years back because it was ridiculously loud. I still use it to run 6 lotro clients, which needs more horsepower than wow.

I think the 450 is the lower power model of the bunch, but I could be mistaken.

remember that they uped the graphics engine in this patch. if you want last weeks performance, you need to turn down your graphics settings to "pre 4.0.1" standards. I hear that shadow detail is giving issues with even high end systems, credit to fleaplus on that one :P
Wondering what now will be the new pew pew class....

Upgrade to a 470/480 if you wish, but do note it won't get any better other than performance. They are loud, hot-running power-sucking cards.

there are various temp monitoring software out there. I use "msi afterburner" to monitor temps/voltage and use it to change my cards fan speed, core-memory-shader clock speeds. Same author of rivatuner I believe, so things will look the same.

Even though it is MSI software, it works on my evga gtx 260, so I am sure it will work on yours. just do not mess with the voltages that much or at all, could damage your card.
Evga also has a similar software by the same author of the msi afterburner, not sure if it has been updated recently though.

I run 2x Palit gtx 460 2gb cards, i've tested one card and it does work just fine, the extra memory is nice when you have five instance of wow going

I might have just had a bad apple. I read nothing but good reports on the 460GTXs but mine was locking up and the fan was very loud. I just returned it and got a 480GTX and its very quiet in comparison.. it not any louder than my 280GTX was. On a good note i can play all my other games on max settings on this card and its smooth as butter 8)

I was really wanting to do the 2x460GTXs since they cost the same as my 480GTX but have higher performance in tests. But i have had nothing but bad luck with duel cards.I don't think ill need anything new for a few years 8)

The best silent card you can get is 9800 ... thats what I am using.

I use a arm like thing that mount a 120cc fan right above the video card. If you have a huge heat sink you MIGHT get away with it. Well they make a product that can take two 120cc fans:

Glad I looked this up for you I can move to something better then a 9800 now and still have low noise.

I am 5boxing with a 460 GTX - no problems at all, no additional noise.

Main toon is on max graphics, the other 4 on lowest. 60 fps in IF, even with the cata groupies

From my experience, the GTX 2x0 series cards based on the reference design had the fan working as an exhaust, with the whole GPU shroud channeling air from the fan out the back of the case. The reference for the 460s is a standard fan, that blows the air around everywhere. I prefer the exhaust method, and I bought the EVGA 460s with the external exhaust fan.

I'd check out MSI Afterburner. It's an overclocking utility, but you can also control the fan with it.
