As a long time pc user I used to hate macs... till I spent a year supporting them for verizons DSL service. Most pc users just dont know a lot about macs and there are more sterotypes in this thread than I have seen in a long time.

Keyclones issue is cost vs reward. He doesnt have a mac to dev it on nor 2 to test it on. He is a smaller company and unfortunately just doesnt have the resources of M$ or Apple.

Try the dual booting options others have mentioned... or... send Rob 2 macs and a dev kit =)

hey jeebz and welcome to the forums!

you made me chuckle a bit here @ work.. thanks for that

i may have under exaggerated the number of mac multi-boxers a bit, but i think you get the drift. in order to properly port keyclone (and yes, i have over 10 years on linux/unix/embedded, 15 years of client/server, and 20 years on windows so porting wouldn't be too much of an issue)... it would require at least 2 macs to test properly, along with the development environment. the exact cost should be close to what i stated... which would require about 200+ mac specific keyclone sales to break even.

it is my understanding that keyclone does work under wine on linux... so i have that platform covered. does the mac have a similar emulator it could run on?

Hi and thanks for the welcome.

Man - I want to first apologize - I reread my initial post and realized I made it sound like you personally were not a professional and I didn't mean to do that - I was saying porting from a windows base to unix would be challenging.

There are windows emulators for mac (Parallels or VMWARE), but you cannot run (not that I know of) WoW in that environment - the graphics pass-through is crappy. Now the reverse scenario is possible. You can run OSX on a non-apple hardware. So you might find some luck there...

http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/in...llation_Guides

Then you could be the one dual-booting :P Your cost to get started would be lower, since you wouldn't need any apple hardware. Just an idea.

cheers!

I find Clonekeys on a mac easy: if you know the key is going to get broadcast to every WoW window, you just have to adjust and make sure the macro or keyboard setup on the slave WoWs is assigned correctly for the action. Similarly, you have to adjust the master WoW setup to have some dumb keys for when you need to communicate with the slaves only. Programming macros to use modifier keys (ctrl, shift, etc) allows you to perform some nice variations as well, for example dps-ing the focus target or healing a party member with the ctrl key modifier pressed.

I think it would be a challenge for a non-professional programmer to switch to a unix-based kernel (OSX) for porting an application that was designed for the windows platform. We can't be mad at Keyclone for not wanting to invest in such an endeavor.

Alternatively, Clonekeys is an open source project, the code is there for people to use/change/enhance. If you are a mac user, contributing to Keyclone's development fund (especially when the developer made the comment he did earlier in this thread) seems sort of silly, imho. Instead I think it would be better to get the community of dual-boxing mac users out there (all 10 of us video editing nerds, lol) to try to contribute to/support Clonekeys.

Finally, I would just like to say how much fun it is to have 5 WoW's running on my Mac Pro (dual quad, 8GB ram). Using the OSX Leopard "Spaces" feature makes switching to the client windows a breeze. I'll post a snapshot 8) soon.

For me, it's completely functional and I was able to take my orc-shammy-family from 1 to 10 in a few hours after installing Clonekeys and creating the toons. I hit the same problems others report in other threads (namely, how gather quests both suck *AND* blow), but it was surprisingly easy after all.

cheers!
Thanks for the input Jeebz. I actually contacted the developer of CloneKeys and he's not doing it anymore. So money sent there is going nowhere at this point.

I haven't developed in, gosh, 10+ years now after drifting into network engineering or I'd take a stab at it myself.

I'm glad to hear things work well on your Mac - my brand spanking new 8-core 2.8Ghz Mac Pro w/ 10G of RAM arrives tomorrow. Muahahaha.

Kibbles, you give me the mental image of Tim Allen putting a drag racing engine and spoilers on his PUSH LAWNMOWER. Because that's what a mac with those specs is LOL

We don't need to rehash the Mac vs. PC arguments here - it's not appropriate - but suffice it to say I'll put a Mac up against a PC in pretty much anything other than as a hardcore gaming platform (I'll be the first to admit that Apple hasn't paid enough attention to the gaming market) any day of the week.

But for photo/video editing and just a much calmer, more serene use of computers -- there's a reason for why the Mac has been increasing marketshare by leaps and bounds lately.

Try it, you might like it. Besides, it means you won't ever have to deal with Vista.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming of trying to figure out a way to either get KeyClone ported or have some enterprising individual pick up further development of CloneKeys.

I'd sooner deal with Vista than Mac's nasty layout ;p But in all seriousness I don't have any REAL beef or hate for macs, I Just love picking on them, it's so easy to rile 'em up ;D Should see me and this rogue friend on mag, we go at it all the time about macs vs pcs lol; nothing serious ;)

That marketshare is totally the ipod/iphone though...they charge more for an ipod when I can(and DID) get an MP3 player that's just as good for a third the price. The iphone though I can't really argue...even I was tempted to get one purely so I could browse the non-firewalled intarwebz at work but then my sanity kicked in and said it ain't worth the price so I just kept adding on to my Nintendo DS collection instead ;p lol

Hello & Thanks!

This thread helped me out considerably.. (after digging through some of it :| )

I'm also a mac user, (got my pro! i <3 it!), I'm actually just in the process of getting it ready to dual box atm. Only two accounts right now, but maybe that will change soon.

This site is INCREDIBLY useful and helpful. I hope you all keep up the great (and mostly friendly) interactions!
It's so refreshing to get to a forum and not see what I see on the WoW forums. Sadly, I'm sure you all know what I speak of.

Anyways, just wanted to say 'hello!'
Thanks to Gruum I found this site and will now be entering the dual boxing world!

I use a mixture of PC's and Mac's. I use Apple Remote Desktop for the Mac's and RealVNC for the PC's. I use HotKeyNet for my key broadcasting. It works. No problems. Okay, I can't figure out how to send ALT key reliably, but I just use SHIFT and CTRL instead. I would like a complete solution, but most broadcasting programmers don't seem to want to cross platform boundaries. Until they make a wireless X-Keys, this will have to do.
