Maybe consider this story - i've got a baby daughter born 4 months early and stayed in hospital for a year before coming home. To cut a really long story short if we were in the states we may have be bankrupt, homeless and probably baby-less. Here, not questions asked, just what's the best for the kid. She's developing fine and ahead of expectation (have a less that 10% chance of survival this time last year).

I'm not saying our system is good or works or whatever but sometimes not putting a price of a life or operation can make such a huge difference. After that experience i've decided to stop judging people and accept that people will always take advantage of a policy.

Would you still withdraw your tax dollars from her if it meant also removing support for a family that really needs it?

And if you're still concerned about your tax dollars, god forbid anything were to ever happen to you which may require generosity from anyone. Because you would then understand why these measures are in place, and you would be glad you're not running the government hehe.

    In peace.

There are many other non-government options for situations like that. I have a cousin whose baby was born with a hole in her heart. To make a long story short, the hospital and doctors performed 3 operations at no cost to them and they have received a lot of help from the local community and church.

The point is, the government is not the only answer. There are many charities out there that will help people when they need it. And there are a lot of people willing to donate to these charities which is true generosity.

Plus, there is a big difference in the charity the government hands out vs. an actual charity organization hands out. I have 2 nephews who have been unemployed almost 2 years now, they live in NJ but have spent most of their time in Florida visiting friends who are in college down there. They are complaining that they have to go back to NJ to start looking for a job because their unemployment is running out.

I have kids and go to school fulltime if I can figure out how to lose my job I'd make more money on unemployment. Gogo stupid government plans and extra money for having kids and going to school.

I've spent quite some time in the USA in the past 12-13 years, both as a tourist and for work, and one thing I've learned is that it's rather pointless to argue with an american about religion, social security, abortion and political systems. Their is no right or wrong, they just have a different opinion about it. An opinion that makes sense given their context and history.

They are fine with a president that says god bless america, but they want to keep the impact of the government as small as possible. Whereas we want to keep church far away from us, but we are fine with a rather big role for the government (we = western europe, i.e. main members of the EU).

Things they are fine with, are hard to imagine for us, and the other way around.

I know I said, I would not post again, But zenga has a good point.

as I understand it, Americans or at least part of the reason for the original Immigrants (ie quakers, shakers, and the like) came here for Religous freedoms, at a time when in EU, the Church and state where close together.

The EU countries have had a long history of various theocracy's so I can understand their POV , when it relates to how us Americans view things differently.

One thing also to consider, is in the founding days of America, and for years after, the idea of independence was quite strong. to forge out into the wild, and build ones own home. Now that is not to say we didn't accept help during the revelution, as I would be remiss to see the sacrifices countries like France made.

at that time, I believe, we would have witnessed a break from any kind of empirical government, and while I think it was for good reason, YMMV.

it is because of this, that so many of us, have a distrust even to this day, of Government. why we would rather rely on ourselves, our neighbors, or even our Churches , for possible situations, and in Small town America, this works great.

Anyways, I just wanted to say, I can see and understand the points from the EU on this. It is just that we are somewhat different in how we view things.

If it where up to me, More of my own tax money in my own pocket, means I can help out more people I choose to , on my own.

There are douches on either side of the argument in this sort of thing. My solution is to get rich so I don't have to worry so much about this crap.

Multivac because the most logical solution would be to vacuum all humans into space to solve the problem? :P
