Alchemy does seem pretty cheap to level compared to JC though. That's a bonus.

Engineering will have its own version of 'gems' that can go in certian items I think. They are called cogs or something. They are basically the equivilent of the boosted gems JC's got. The ones I saw focused around something and mastery.
It was on MMO-Champion awhile back. Sorry I dont have a link.
I've always been a big fan of having every profession I can in a team. My 'main' team has everything except for Herbalism on it. I do cooking/fishing on the tank and will probably put arch. on him too.
I think Blacksmithing/JC has been the 'Wrath' combo - Scribe/Enchanting is not bad for shoulders/rings.
You can fit everything you need to go 1-450 Alchemy in like a couple of 20 slot bags so in terms of doing it en-mass its fairly simple.
What better reason to choose Alchemy than to be able to transform into a dragon!

Between azeroth fly, high speed flying and getting the new level on professions, we'll need something around 5k per toon on Cataclysm very start. That's a lot of money(well for people like me that hates the whole AH deal... I always just have enough money for my goals
).
