First thing's first. If you don't have the money to do it right, you're better off with saving until you can. You'll just regret it later on.

Are you wanting to 2 box? 5 box? 10 box? Can you live with graphics set on low? Etc...

You can 5 box just fine on two year old computer with 4gigs of ram. You just have to adjust the graphics pretty low.

So it all depends on your goals and expectations. Once you state those clearly you'll get a better responce from the community.

You might want to post how much you have to spend and what hardware you have currently (Maybe you can reuse a monitor or something). Low for some people might be $300, and others it's might be like $2000.

I think if you give a $$ amount someone here will get you the best bang for the buck.

My opinion is that Core 2 Quad (or equivalent) and 6g ram is a minimum.

you can do it on a dual core processor with 8gig ram; all toons set to low res except main who has draw distance set to max. This is on a 7200 HDD and 512mb GPU. Not sure if the requirements for Cata will increase though and that's something worth thinking about. There are good deals on I5's and pick up a SSD while you're at it, I hear good things about it

I 5-boxed on a dual core (first gen, not core 2 duo) 2Ghz laptop with 4 GB ram and a 256MB nvidia 7600 (mobile).

I had everything on low and I had stable 20-30FPS on my main and 10max on my slaves.

worked fine all through burning crusade. I know that there are some new shaders etc but you don't have to use them.

I just upgraded recently after asking for advice here. I bought a used system. X4 965, 5770, 4gb ram ddr3. I upgraded that to 12gb ram, and it works superb using ISBoxer + 5 windows on 1 computer. I'm sure an I7 would be better, but I get no lag or hiccups anywhere, settings maxed on main window.

As mentioned in other threads, hard drive speed and plenty of memory will help you the most, then a quad core processor. Everything else is secondary. In my opinion, of course.
