I would guess from it being overpowered and being taken out.

Although I (we) can see that it could be overpowered, I really don't think that's the reason they took it out. I think it's because they didn't want a talent focusing on one spell that is rarely used and highly situational. I'm still hoping it comes back, or even better they make holy nova the unique holy spell (though that would suck for disc priests).

I think most priests consider holy nova the second worst spell next to lightwell.
