It only takes the tinyest of difference in response time, machine / WoW instance performance, entering melee combat, channeling a spell, flying, a random runaway, a fear bomb, sap, a death (God forbid!) or any one of a huge number of other events to put them out of sync again.
I really am thoroughly puzzled by most of this thread. Use /follow to get everyone following and work from there. Asuming a majority caster group, the actual number of times you need to micro-manage individual characters is very limited and can be handled with instance-specific key combinations.
For instance, I use:
WASDEQ - move main only (plus the mouse of course).
ARROWS - move all drones together (not main).
SHIFT+ARROWS - move only drone 1
CTRL+ARROWS - move only drone 2
ALT+ARROWS - move only drone 3
CTRL+SHIFT + ARROWS - move only drone 4
I also have instance-specific strafing keys, and stuck mini post-it notes ("CTRL", "SHIFT", etc) on each monitor so I don't forget which is which when the pressure's on!
A typical encounter goes:
/follow
<formation button> to stop caster drones while I continue driving the tank.
<tankage> <nukage>
/cheer
/follow
I don't see what could be easier really. All this talk of zoning and trying to maintain synchronisation for the entire play session, especially when you really don't want your team all together for the vast majority of significant encounters, baffles me quite honestly.
If all else fails, and you really can't work out a sensible scheme that works for you in PvP, roll a Warlock team - their DoTs are not direction-sensitive, or use a channeled spell (arcane missiles, mind flay, whatever you have available) which will auto-turn you to your target when you're on the edge of losing control of the encounter, so long as you're already facing roughly the right way of course
