Default How to use alt + x = other skill?

This might sound COMPLETLEY noobish... but i've never used these types of commands in wow and have no clue how to set them up.

If you open up the Esc menu in wow and hit Key Bindings it will bring up a list of all of your keys and what they are bound to. I know that you can actually bind keys directly to a skill via a mod or what not but the easiest way would be to bind alt + x or whichever key you want to one of your action bar thingos. Say you wanted to use the very first slot on your bottom left actionbar you open up your spellbook and drag a spell onto it. Then open up key bindings (esc > key bindings) then find Bottom Left Action Bar 1 and hit the set key button. You then press alt + x or any combo you want and you are good to go. Hope that helps.

what if it is not on the action bar with the already pre-determined 1-=?
Like say... an action bar above it... or one gotten to by say... shift+up arrow?.

I'm just a tad confused now You have the default action bar with 1-= you can then turn on the Bottom Left and Right action bars and the two right actions bars. You can then assign keys to those bars. And as best I can remember Shift+up is the default keybinding for scrolling through all 5 action bars I think.

Well you shouldn't I'd post some screenshots for you if I could but I'm at work at the moment, and besides someone else would probably be better of explaining it to you instead of myself

I personally unbind all the ctrl-# and alt-# keys on my alts.

This allows me to use a # on all clients and allow some to ignore the command at the macro level, saves slot assignments on your UI(s).

I.e. fireball is the primary command here (2)

/cast [modifier:alt, exists, harm, nodead] Scorch // I typically don't use Scorch on trash and if i'm about to fight a boss he's always pretargeted anyway.
    /stopmacro [modifier:alt]
    /cast [exists,harm,nodead] Fireball
    /stopmacro [exists,harm,nodead]
    /assist whoever (Focus, party1, etc.)
    /cast [exists,harm,nodead] Fireball

I do the same for some of my CC commands

    /stopcasting [modifier:alt]
/cast Counterspell [modifier:alt] // I pretty much only use this when my mages have an active caster target
    /stopmacro [modifier:alt]
    /stopcasting [modifier:ctrl, target=focus, exists, harm, nodead]
    /cast Counterspell [modifier:ctrl, target=focus, exists, harm, nodead]

Second macro is useful for fights like R&J in Opera where you can't CC a caster but need to be able to interrupt it's spells
