Default Viability of Protadins in cataclysm?

Recently I started to play my pally solo in bg's, prot spec with mix of ret (crit/str) & healing (sp/crit) gear. I'm far from where I wanna be gear wise, but despite that I'm having a blast. Some time ago i started with a warrior + 4 pally team that i shelved after trying out retribution a couple of times (solo). Playing the retribution spec is just not my thing, can't say I like it. Melee wise I'll hook this prot pally up with 3x dk + priest soon.

Long story short: I was wondering if anyone has an idea about the viability of protadins in cata. From the brief look I had at the talents i'd say yes. I have a lot of leveling to do on the team and the sole purpose would be to run multiple protadins at once. Thus wanna more or less hear other opinions before i take the jump.

edit: forgot to add my focus is bg's, not arena

Everything that is fun in life is either bad for your health, immoral or illegal!

I think they'll be hitting incredibly hard in ret gear, with high survivability, but im not too sure they're gonna be "good" in bgs.

Just for comparison a few minutes ago i took my ret pally on beta and cross specced him over to tankadin.... The tank spec currently is doing more dps than the ret spec lol. There will be a lot of fine tuning yet im sure but the viability will be there. Coupled with a couple priests(ie maybe 3 prot 2 priest or 3 prot shaman priest) this team will be a lot o fun to play. HIGHLY gear dependant i would say tho

Got a video on my channel of playing triple ProtRet boxed on the arena tournament realm.

Have not tried ProtRet on cata beta yet, though if i make a premade pally maybe I'll actually have gear for it unlike my poor copied prot pally.
Though atm I hear some prot abilities do a lot more damage than they are supposed to there.

Usually, if something works well in arena, it works even better in bg's.
I'm going to live forever, or die trying.

I personally think Prot of any kind will be crap in cata- pvp wise

The are making Vengeance dispellable and prot dmg is only good when you have Vengeance. They will be decent at flag carrying and maybe defending a AB node, I guess.

Q: What is the role of Vengeance in PvP?
A: Hopefully irrelevant. If making it dispellable isn't sufficient, we'll simply turn it off.

Q: Why can't tanks do competitive damage in PvP?
A: Because they chose the tank role instead of the dps role. Tanking comes with enormous advantages that are helpful in PvP, such as being hard to kill, hard to control and having good control of your own. That will be even more useful in the Rated BGs of Cataclysm.
