Mr. Original Poster you don't mention anything about hardware brands or even a motherboard so it is impossible to say whether you'll be making the right choices. If you're going to buy an i7 930 and not use triple channel memory you're going to be gimping yourself. If you're trying to cut costs by only going with dual channel instead of triple channel I can only suggest you hold off until you can afford triple channel as to not cause headaches down the line during a memory upgrade. From the first post it almost looks as if you're going to try and drop a 930 into the same motherboard that is holding the Q6600, which isn't going to work.
Here is a generic answer. Yes if you upgrade your old hardware you will obviously see an increase in your frame rate, it would not make any sense if you upgraded your hardware from old school to mainstream and saw a performance drop.
