    Default help with modem/internet

I've had problems getting a stable internet connection for quite some months now, just got the second replacement modem from my provider, but the problems haven't changed. (again.) So it's quite obvious that the problem is outside my house.

So, now i hope there's someone here who knows his way around this stuff and could possibly tell me what i should tell my provider to fix.

The repeating process in the event log of the modem is this:
23.05.10 16:05:42 Internet connection established successfully. IP address: ##.###.##.###, DNS server: ###.###.#.## and ###.###.#.##, Gateway: ##.###.##.#
23.05.10 16:05:36 DSL is available (DSL synchronization exists with 4100/951 Kbit/s).
    23.05.10 16:05:18 Internet connection cleared.
23.05.10 16:05:18 DSL not responding (no DSL synchronization).

I have no clue if you can say anything with just this info. Dunno what would help.

Everything in house is connected like it should. 100% guaranteed, even had 2 mechanics(or whatever you call them in english) here who changed some things. And they also stated that the problem has something to do with the network from the provider.

Do you no if your provider has "small print" restrictions? i.e. some providers of "unlimited" internet actually restrict your internet at peak times and that can couse your net to fail if put under load i.e loading 5 wows etc. also have you changed your internet speed lateley? i had an issue when i upgraded to 8MB from 2MB and i ended up recieving 1.5MB and a very unstable connection due to the line being very old and incapable of running at 8MB wich made my connection clog up with error's and fail...
Can't think of anything else but if everything is fine at your end and the phone line can handle your speeds then it's down to your provider and maybe you'll have to switch : /
Run a speed test on your internet just to see if what you get is what your meant to get http://www.speedtest.net/
    Hope this helps :P

The peak thing could be, i guess not though, since it's the best rated provider availible in my awesome little country :P It's akso often enough not at peak hours, like in the morning for example.

Haven't changed anything. So i guess i'll just wait till i can ring them again and tell them to send a mechanic to the local interhousethingy where they control stuff or so. The problem with switching is that it probably doesn't fix anything, since the network is maintained by an older provider called KPN and my provider pays them to be able to use the network. The mechanic that'll come will and was(previous times) from KPN aswell. So it's just screwed :/

    But thanks for the reply

most adsl connections are on a contention ration of 50:1 (you share the bandwith with up to 50 other users in your area). some services however are on a 20:1 ratio, and premium business solutions are normally at 5:1. I guess you have to pay for guaranteed bandwith (or live miles from anyone )

if you want to check your system out you could try some of the following:

try just a telephone on the line - is there any background noise? (crackles / humming) this could indicate a fault with somewhere with your line. most telecoms companies have a dial code for testing the line (in the UK this is 17070 and you can then run a quiet line test )

have you tried replacing the microfilters? (each device on the line needs its own microfilter)

sometimes on a noisy line the situation has been helped by daisy chaining multiple filters together.

or try just using the DSL router as the only device on the line with no microfilter, connected directly to the telephone socket.

normally i find that vendor supplied DSL routers are not that great, and I tend to replace them for something better (in the UK companies normally supply some variation of Netgear router, which are not the most stable of devieces, and need rebooting often). At work we look after over 250 DSL connections, so I have had quite a bit of experience in this matter.

if you are looking for a good ADSL router try looking at the offerings from Zyxel (we use the PW-661HW-D range) and we have never had any major problems with the later versions. (the non "D" versions had a tendency to lock up after about a month of use).

any other questions just give me a shout.
