Thread: epic flying lag

    Default epic flying lag

This has a real negative impact on my 5 boxing experience... Whenever I use flyers - actually not just epic flyers but the problem is compounded by epic flyers - the toons on autofollow get lag or something when moving between areas, not really zones per say just areas I guess. They lose autofollow. Its so bad that i basically have to individually fly my toons wherever i want to go.

I dont get lag to speak of otherwise - just with flyers. I can have 4 of my toons hanging out in Dal while I do a 25 man raid on my main and it works fine. Is there some setting I can maybe turn off that will eliminate this?

When referring to area's / zones are you sure you dont cross Phasing area's ??
I only get this in Northrend, never have it in outlands, but several areas in Northrend are using Phasing (areas change while doing quests).
EVEN THOUGH all your characters have done the same quests and are in the same phase they do get enough lag when entering the phase that causes my chars to loose /follow.
After some time you get used to it and remember where these areas are and i anticipate by just waiting a sec after jamba warns me that follow is broken to let everycharacter load in the phase before resuming flight.

could be phasing areas i guess. i get it constantly though - immediately leaving dal going north in crystal song. There's no phasing areas that I know of in crystal song and it happens every few seconds basically. It seems like a network lag thing honestly although I have a good cable connection. I almost never had this problem in Outlands =( so phasing could be it and well its everywhere for me.

ugh i'm getting it on my land mounts as i try to get my dps slaves hodir ready. going from brunnhildar village to valley of ancient winters I literally cannot see toons 2 ft away from me unless i cross over into the other area. This would definitely be a phase type area I am sure. Argh. I hate this. these phase areas are everywhere? /cry

This is indeed a phasing Area.
The most common ones are the area with Brunhildar Village quests.
Also the first town in Icecrown north of dalaran and its area, the area south of Icecrown Citadel and the area north of Icecrown.

I dont know if you use Jamba ??? I use it and it gives me a /raidwarning when follow is broken.
I know when to expect it, and when i get the warning i just stop moving on my leadtoon for 2-3 seconds to let each slave 'phase in'.
Sometimes they are stuck in the area before the phase, all i have to do than is press my up arrow key (i have my arrow keys relayed to each screen) so the alts move into the phased area and get back into range for /follow.

I also use Jamba's FollowStrobe, when i get the follow broken warning i just wait 2 seconds and followstrobe picks them back up, no need to mash the follow button.

Other than that.... get used to it, suck it up, whine at blizzard for making phased areas, or go back to singleboxing, or just ignore it and be happy that we at least have /follow (some MMO's dont even have that).

I initially lost follow, pretty much anywhere, with epic flyers.
The solution was to fly a little and then stop.
Basically going in short 3-5 second bursts.

Having upgraded to the i7 system...
Straight flight is great now, and its hard to lose followers, unless its a phase crossing.
If the Pally is in the lead, with Crusader Aura on, I can sometimes lose followers.

If the Pally is following, and another toon is leading, the slaves never break follow.
    Except at the phase points.

You could try reducing your settings some.
Or upgrading your system, as cash allows.
It will definitely improve your flight/follow etc, everywhere other then across phased areas.
    Not much will help there.
It would be nice if Blizz had everyone on the same point in the phase quests, so there was no phase point.
But not sure if they can code it that way.

Phasing will always break /follow because of the way Blizzard handles dynamic content. There is nothing you can do about it except just learn to deal with it as the rest of us have.

I have epic flyers on most of my teams, I do use them - but I use the flight paths as much as possible to reduce phasing problems.

For Northrend dailies, I'll also use flightpaths often instead of risking a autofollow break. usually takes about 10 seconds to recover from a break which is a long time compared to flight timers.

The reason Phasing is such an issue is that the Leader will cross the line first and vanish on the slaves' screens. Half the time the Leader can still look back and see the slaves, but the slaves can't link up until the they also cross the line (can't see leader/can't target). So whenever I lose them, I just hit the forward key for a couple seconds to push everyone over, then wait for them to visually appear before hitting autofollow again. In Icecrown, I tend to put a raid icon on my main to help keep track. There's so many phasing areas in that zone, its not funny.

I too use flight paths for dailies.
Don't really fly anywhere with phased content, aside from Icecrown.

Once phased content breaks follow... Jamba spams me (raid warning) that follow has broken.
At which point, I press W, to break auto movement (or just take my finger off of W).
And then press Up Arrow (which is mapped to slave movement forward, without master moving).
This brings all of the slave toons across the phase divider.
And then I press my follow key, and its all good again.

Something else I found broke follow was when I was low on memory. So when you move from an area where the system needs to load new data, follow would break due to machine lag. Once I got some extra ram the issue went away and I only get follow broken on phased areas.
Remember that even though you might have 8 - 12 gig of memory you would need to make sure there was not a lot running in the background and at least keep an eye on memory usage to avoid memory related lag.
SSD drive would help this a little I would think.
