I made a spreadsheet, which is basically the lowest priced mats for transmutes, and the lowest price for each cut gem, and it calculates profit. Of course there is the assumption that things sell.

So far I've got 5 alchemists doing transmutes each day. I list gems for 12 hours, and don't bother to relist if I am undercut. But I don't put up more then one at a time, even if I have multiples. I try to have one of each cut at a time, and then multiples of the gems which are selling the most. I'm willing to play the undercut game with the undercutters. There's one guy who checks fairly often, and undercuts me by 1 copper; the others seem to check the AH no more then once a day or so.

I've sold 8 out of the 16 gems I have produced so far. So the system seems to be working fine.

The goal is to be able to quit doing the dailies, which are incredibly boring and monotonous, while still retaining an income. All of my alliance toons have their epic flyers, aside from the leftover teams from RAF who are in the process of leveling to 68th for alchemy purposes. Horde side I'm sitting at 13k, but the toons are only 22nd and far lower priority then my alliance side toons; I'd like each to have epic flyers and they probably will have the gold before they're the level to need it. I wouldn't mind 5k per toon, as a cushion against whatever cash sink is introduced in Cataclysm.

At the moment, of the cuts I know, after the materials cost the profit range is decent.. My actual profits on the 8 gems sold:
    Eye of Zul - Turbid 195g 21s
    Ametrine - Empowered 192g 08s
    Eye of Zul - Lambent 187g 21s
    Dreadstone - Infused 176g 71s
    Majestic Zircon - Solid 166g 34s
    Dreadstone - Shifting 163g 29s
    Dreadstone - Shifting 163g 29s
    Ametrine - Lucent 159g 80s

Looking at the toons I have available, I could have 29 alchemists who are part of teams/character sets. I have 3 more toons who are not on any team, that likely won't level up but have the open trade slot if I really wanted to level them. If profits slipped to 100g per cut, I'd be quite happy regardless... that would be slightly more then I'm making per day now from dailies, in a fraction of the time.

So far, I am planning for 29 alchemists... The server economy is pretty strong alliance side. And horde side the AH is relatively dead; anything I transfer over (for 1 copper via the neutral AH) sells horde-side very quickly. Could sell gems there too, quite easily if I need to.
