My Pally/ Shammy Team I felt like hey We are all on the same TEAM!!!

This Dk/Ret team its like a rivalry. I feel the Dk saying I swear if you rip agro from me one more time your OUT OF THE TEAM!

on a more serious note anyway to make him less bursty? I mean besides not suck and use damn Icebound fort....

I'd tend to look at the Pally buff for increased threat from holy damage.
I always have that on, but as a Ret you don't want the threat.

Amazingly i have been having good results with a 1-disease 2handed Frost build.

Even though my 4 Ret Paladins had way better gear than my DK tank (from running protpally/4ret for 2 months before switching tanks) i had no trouble keeping single and AoE agro with this setup.

Also very easy to macro with a clickmacro
/castsequence reset=4 Howling Blast,,,,,,,,,,,,(enough comma's to reset when your frost rune is available again)
    /castsequence reset=4 Obliterate,,,,,,,,,,
/castsequence reset=4 Blood Boil, Blood Boil,,,,,,,,,,,,

    main click macro is
    /startattack
    /Click button "1"
    /Click button "2"
    /Click button "3"
    /Cast Frost Strike (rune dump)
    /Cast Rune Strike (rune dump)

This is a very straight and simple setup and allows a nice flow of rune usage
    Howlingblast is 1unholy/1frost rune
    Obliterate is 1unholy/1frost rune
Bloodboil is 1blood rune (used twice)

I never get stuck on this macro, constantly casting spells and never getting in trouble with runes off cooldown.
And amazingly enough it holds agro quite well, even when soloboxing in random heroics with agro monkeys

Only different is I didn't have the glyph to proc frost fever from howling blast, but I'm skeptical as to whether a single disease would make all the aggro difference when it was lost so easily before.
There is your problem, for this setup you NEED the howling blast proc to get frost fever on all targets since this helps with DoT-Aggro AND it increases the bloodboil damage and threat

I wrote a guide a while back on my blog for DK tanking. You might find it useful, as a lot of this was figured out while 5 boxing shamans + DK and a mixed group + DK.

Personally, Frost is probably going to be your best bet for tanking heroics. Especially in a group of retadins. You may want to start working on T10 2pc for the DK ASAP so you can get the increased DND damage as well, which also has proven to be a great boon for AE threat.

And I can't stress this enough... macro /cast Runstrike to every ability you use on your DK tank. If the ability is up, you need to use it.
