    1. No history, just frustration.
    2. Current 3D solutions for the consumer require a 120hz monitor and special glasses/goggles. Also, 3D surround is simply nvidia's reaction to eyefinity, with their own twist/way to make money (nvidia 3d surround certified monitors that cost a boatload, anyone?). Please note the requirement of two gpus in sli for 3d surround (Doesn't have to be fermi) is a grab to keep their current consumer base (who could just buy another one of their current gpus instead having to buy two fermi cards, versus buying one 5XXX series card (or two lower end cards and crossfiring them for less).

Let's not forget nvidia's pricing policy on cards. It's going to start retailing at a very high price point, regardless of actual price/performance/power usage.

Oh, regarding playing across multiple monitors (3+) without a 5XXX card/fermi/SLI'd(identical) cards, it's been done for a long time via solutions such as SoftTH (software triple head) and Matrox TripleHead2Go.
