Default Will a DP to DVI or HDMI adapter work with the eyefinity cards?

I'm seriously thinking about trying it out, the new cards from ATI, But I don't have the cash to spring for new monitors right now. I was wondering if any of these will work ...

If so, it might be a cheaper way to go for us multiboxers who already have 3+ monitors. Anyone have any luck with this?

Looks like it ought to work with just about any monitor format, unless I'm reading this wrong:

    http://support.amd.com/us/eyefinity/...y-dongles.aspx

    http://www.accellcables.com/products...isplayPort.htm

In looking at the cables descriptions there, I would guess they all convert from the ATI displayport output to whatever monitor you want to run.

That's what I'm thinking Ugh. At 25 bucks a pop, I think I'll try one or two different kinds next month and see how they go.

A simple cable converter from DP to HDMI etc will not work.
Make sure you buy an active converter, they once I have seen are powered from USB and cost ~99$ or so.

This, an active adapter is a must.

Ahh ok, thanks for the heads up guys. Hmm, might have to balance it with the cost of a monitor after all.

So, why would AMD, the purveyors of EyeFinity, list those passive dongles as "critical for an optimal experience with ATI Eyefinity Technology" if they won't work? Some fine print I'm missing on the manufacturer's site?

[edit2] Gawd, that hardocp thread is nigh useless.

[edit] Dug a bit and found this:

Note where it says if you're only using two monitors, needs passive only.

Link I found that in: http://hardocp.com/article/2009/09/2...hnology_review

Ughmahedhurtz, All the AMD/ATI examples I have seen assumes you have at least one monitor with DisplayPort input and is compatible with DP-signals. Most monitors however only use DVI/HDMI/VGA standard and cant input DP-signals, this is why an active adapter is needed to convert the DP-signals into something the monitor understands.

Also, the cards feature 3x HDMI/DVI outputs, but two of these are shared and cant be used at the same time. For 3x display EyeFinity mode is then only possible by using 2x DVI/HDMI and 1x DP, a simple DP-cable/converter works if you have one monitor that supports DP. If your monitor does not support DP (few does) then you can still use that monitor but with an active adapter.

    EyeFinity is confusing
