Default Athlon64 X2 vs. Intel Core 2 Duo

    Hey all

I have been having problems with frame rates lately when I play. Currently I have been 4-boxing. My computers configuration is as follows

    Athlon 64 X2 - 2.0 GHz
    3 GIG PC3200 RAM
    Geforce 8800 GT 512 Meg

With all 4 accounts going I get frame rates of about 12-18 fps. So I have considered upgrading to an Intel Core 2 Duo. I read some stuff online comparing the two however they never looked at multiboxing. What I am considering going to is:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz
    4 Gig PC 5300 RAM
    -and the same video card.

Do you think I would see a performance boost? Should I be getting better performance than I currently am? Is there a difference between the Intel and AMD chips with regards to Multiboxing?

I know I have a couple of questions. Sorry I dont mean to be a pest. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    mackenziemi

Based on what I see in my labs here with Athlon X2 and Core2duo machines and a general guesstimate based on the charts in the link above, I'd guess you'd see about a 15-20% increase in performance with your setup just from the CPU. Upgrading your memory as you mentioned will also gain you a not insignificant gain. I'd guess with both of those upgrades, you'd see about a 25-30% improvement.

This is ballpark based on my experience in the industry, so don't bank on this.

Id concur with that, especially if you are going from DDR to DDR2 memory.

unless you are getting that ram for free, step up to ddr2-800, it shouldn't cost very much more (if at all) with all the deals on it out there right now...

Well the AMD X2 is still ddr based ($$$$$$$$$$$$$), and most models only have 512k/1meg l2 cache. Core 2's have dd2 (not $$$$$$$$$$), and 4 megs of l2 cache. With the recent price slashing from intel, you can get a 2.4 ghz chip for like 150 bucks, 4 gigs of ram for about 200.
I still play my main character on my X2 box but its just a matter of time before I move completely to my Quad core.

You can get a very good gaming box for under a grand and it will last a very long time.

One big suggestion is to use the maxfpsbak setting to set the max fps for you non main screens...

You have a better system than mine and I run 5 accounts.

I get ~25fps on the main and 10 on the alts. (note: in city I get much worse fps)

wow, umm make that 30fps even in citys... I just set CPU affinity for 1 on processor 0 and the other 3 on processor 1... made a HUGE diffrence...

I though they had fixed wow to automatically handle that... I should have known better... :P
