A lot of people go with 4x Shaman + 1x Paladin.
Because of the synergy between everyone.
4 shammies can dps and heal, without the need of a dedicated healer.

    3 Shammies, a warlock and a Paladin.
Or 2 Shammies, a warlock, a disc priest and a Paladin.
Those are probably my two favorite groups, for PvE content.

Almost anything is viable for PvE content.
Usually you need a tank for heroics, or to outgear heroics by a large margin.
Healers are optional, if your dps can heal.

Battlegrounds are like normal instances or quests; almost anything works here too.
Some things are easier then others, and some have more power then others too.

Arena, is like a heroic, in that some things seem to be rules.
Two classes, seems to be the maximum for competitive 5's.
One class, and a dedicated healer seems to be required, although Pallies proved this is not a hard rule for all compositions.
Experimentation is good, as we don't know what will work and what will not, until its tried.
    EverQuest I: Bard / Enchanter / Druid / Wizard / 2x Magician.

the fact would be that 3 shamans, paladin and warlock/moonkin is best set up once you get geared. No one needs a healer, but coe is highest dps debuff for 3 or 4 casters, easily adding around 1k dps.
All you want priest for is fort, but that is replaced by scroll.

Given that we only have so much attention to go around, very much so. Paladins are damn near autopilot tanks.

Yeah, the 60 or 90 or whatever one buff gives you? Not enough to give a crap about probably. Too bad about stacking.

My experience of druid tanking is that it requires about the same attention as the paladin, since the change to swipe.
Team: Feral Druid, 3 Ele Shaman, 1 Resto Shaman

    Gimp Team: 4 paladins(13) and a DK(80)

It's a hella lot better than it used to be, that's for sure. I should get mine up the rest of the way eventually...fun team, 5x druids. Kinda got put off by the DPS weaving bullshit they added.

For PVE I'll always be a fan of mixed teams coupled with smart castsequences and a dedicated AOE capable healer. I like having arcane intellect, totems, paladin blessings, fortitude, divine spirit, fear ward, replenishment, heroism, mark of the wild, moonkin aura and whatever else up all at once. It's a huge difference in power. The only reason any team can be super-successful these days is because the heroics were poorly balanced for the last couple of major patches and you outgear them with just one piece of badge gear.
