Default three shamans is ENOUGH :)

    hello

it's common to see four or five shamans in a group, but I did some extensive Exceling and found out that in actuality ONLY THREE SHAMANS ARE NECESSARY

to drop all totems that have a 5-minute cooldown, no more than 3 shamans are required

with separate Poison Cleansing and Disease Cleansing totems, things were different, but today, even three shamans won't get their totem bars full (4 totems) if all 5-minute totems are to be dropped

of course it's easy to multibox 5-4 of the same class, but totems are no longer the reason to choose pally+4 shammy

if the group is for PVP, then paladin + 4 shaman is actually much worse than 5shamans (ghost wolves useless, must reach melee range with paladin, gives the enemy a clear target to kill first etc)

but if the group is for PVE, a tankadin is a must for heroics

I have this suggestion for maximum resistances:

    1x tank
    1x shaman (frost res totem)
    1x shaman (fire res totem)
    1x shaman (nature res totem)
    1x priest (shadow res prayer)

holy cannot be resisted, and arcane resistance would be your "weakness"

so the next time you think of a group to level, please consider something else than the stereotypical shammy team or tankadin shammy team.

ps. if you only have one shaman in your group, spec to reduce reincarnation for PvE when you level, saves you a lot of gray hairs

Or just pick the team you feel you will have the most fun with and that should be able to achieve what you want to achieve.

    Gimp Team: 4 paladins(13) and a DK(80)

yes that's the most insightful comment I've heard all year

I'm just stating the facts so people can make informed decisions.

You can build a resistance group without a single shaman. Paladins can cover frost, shadow and fire, hunters can cover nature.

if the group is for PVE, a tankadin is a must for heroics
A paladin is not a must for PvE heroics. Plenty of people are more than happy with druids, DKs and even warriors. For a good while, DKs were highly touted as the shizz for a shaman group.

Its nice of you to do all this 'extensive exceling' to find that you only need 3 shamans, but I cant think of any encounter where you need all those resistance totems dropped in 1 fight. Therefore 1 shaman can provide you with 3 different resistances. If you choose a paladin tank you will also have frost res, fire res and shadow res aura on him.
With that said you shouldnt pick your team based on resistances anyway as the only resistance that is majorly helpful most of the time is shadow res as it helps reduce the chance of getting feared.

Agreed Id take a DK over a pala if I didnt already have a druid giving the 13% damage buff.

I went with a DK tank with 4 shaman's and no regrets here.

I respecced my dk tank to deep frost ( dualwield ) and so i've lost my 13% magic damage increase buff.
It took me a week to get used to it, but now the dk is pumping out more dps then he was previously.
I do miss a shadow resistance guy tho.

    interesting points

and I didn't mean that a paladin is a must for heroics, I meant to say that a tank is (druid, dk, warrior, pally)

and as far as resistances go, I was speaking about PvP

paladins can give many resistances but 4-5 paladins in PvP only works on a certain degree (have tried)

No you are just stating your opinions as if they are facts - big difference.
A paladin tank is not a must have for heroics - it's a nice to have.

Given how many people are running non "stereotypical" groups I think you are very much preaching to the converted.

yes well in my last post I corrected that, I said that a tank is a must, not a paladin per-se
