No, you don't need to switch windows.

Your leader should have wasd set for movement, and those keys blocked for your slaves.

You can set it up the way you want, but I have two toons with q set for strafe left, and the other two have q set for strafe right.

When I run up to a mob (not a boss), all I have to do is hit the q key, and they all stop in place. I drop them off like that all the time, I don't even think about it anymore.

I don't start boss fights with it, but if I need to reposition, I use it.

I also split the /follow and /assist commands - /follow is on a key (f), and I put /assist focus in the slaves macros. That way, if I drop them off, and hit the attack key (1), they will rotate towards the mob. If they don't rotate, then I'll hit F and the q quickly afterwards, which positions them.
