Thread: Prot Warriors

  1. #1

    Default Prot Warriors

This is kind of a rant(no wait... it IS a rant.) I have a new team with a warrior tank and he is getting pretty geared (33k unbuffed maybe 34 I forget). Anyways after a few heroics one thing I have noticed is:
    1. AoE is AWFUL. See that pack over there? Ya you are going to have to TC and Shockwave before your dps start in with their AoE spells. Oops someone overaggrod? NP taunt and beat on that one. Ooops 2 adds went for healer? Shit! Hit AoE taunt. Fuck! Healer died.... I cant tell you how many times this has happened. Compared to Paladins warriors suck balls at AoE.
    2. Single target is not so bad. Warriors need a lot of pregame warmup to do effective tanking. Once you establish aggro you are usually good to go, comparitively on my shaman/paladin team I dont have to wait at all and never lose aggro.

So what did I gain with a warrior tank? Spell reflect, which is F*ckin awesome. Uhm Shield Wall, ok paladins have that. Hmm, Last Stand. Charge? Yea kinda neat.

At this point I'm afraid to take my warrior to tank Ony10, even though he has the health/mitigation/avoidance to do it easily. I'm just scared of the whelps phase where I gotta keep them on me with 5 aggro magnet mages blizzarding. PuG people dont understand that waiting 3secs before you start dps is a good thing. Hell on my paladin as soon as I pull Ony I see 50k dots and shit going off. If it wasnt for misdirect Im sure Ony would splat the dps. I also want to do ToC Heroic, but I know the ghouls will just destroy my dps because my warrior sucks balls at AoE aggro. Le sigh. I should have used my DK tank that was already 80 for this group. =/

I never had aggro issues single box tanking on my prot warrior. Just charge in, thunder clap, take a step back, and shockwave stun em all. Then it's just basically devastate and cleave until tc and sw are off cd. If you can't charge the caster type or if there is more than one of them use heroic throw on them to pull them to you to make sure they get your aoe too.

I actually thought holding aggro was easier as warrior when not boxing but it does take more concentration which makes it harder while boxing.

And Intervene is your friend, just write the macro so you can "intervene" the mob, not the player.

What I normally do is intervene the mob, spin 180 and shockwave, then charge back to the mobs you were taking a second ago. (ya, I'm fast). I having problems playing my warrior to this level WHILE boxing, so that's why I don't use him much. But solo tanking I can tear shit up.
Good rotation on re-aggroing mobs. I do things a little different. As soon as I see mobs going for the formation I stop my tank clicker and do this ->

    challenging shout,shockwave,thunderclap

then back to normal rotation. I know challanging shout has a 3 min cooldown, but this situation very rarely happens. And when it does, it almost never happens twice. And when it does, it is late in the battle and doesn't really matter if one the the other toons takes damage.

I've played a prot warrior solo forever. AoE is fine if you play smart and don't pug. If stuff goes wrong aggro-wise it can be tough to get it under control and if things are wild i can be tough (adds on Sarth) but I love my prot warrior. I am a little biased though.

When i started boxing i tried a pally tank. It felt like cheating. B^ )

Hmm I will try PuGing ToC heroic tonight since its the daily and see whats happens, lol. Hopefully I can handle it. Anyone here do Ony with their warrior? I do realize all the taunt weapons warriors have, but comparatively a paladin (hell DKs and druids too) is cheating on AoE. One spell can hold aggro easily.

one, if you dont have it already, get glyph of cleave, then cleave at all times. SW and TC are good aggro attacks, but its only a single attack and doesnt tick like consecrate. also, youre pretty much wasting your time with improved spell reflect. a build you should be using is 15/3/53. the goal in arms is to get deep wounds which will help tons with aggro.

as long as you cleave the shit out of everything and keep SW and TC on cool-down you should be fine. also, if youre hit/exp is lacking its gonna nerf your threat, so id suggest working on it some if its low. AoE tanking with a warrior is rough, takes time and patience to get good at it.

Who said I took improved spell reflect? I do use 15/3/53 btw.

edit: found out one of my problems, warlock's armor buff heals him and when I would pull a pack they would run straight by me for the warlock and gib him. I now know I have a limited amount of time to get off some AoE damage or hes toast.

My first team to do instances was a Prot Pally with 4x Shammies.
One of the shammies is dual spec for Resto when I want it.

This team has an easy time in instances.
The pally never loses aggro on single mobs, if the pally pulls.
And gets it fast, if the shammies pull with chain lightning for mobs outside of the pallies range.
And for AoE targets, the pally has passive threat from block, retribution aura etc.

My mixed team started to do instances.
Disc Priest healer at 75th, Feral bear at 76th and 70-72's Elemental Shaman, Affliction Warlock and at the time Frost Mage.
There were no issues on single target threat.
However, the druid had serious issues at AoE threat.
The priest could take aggro on secondary mobs from heals.
And the Shammy could using the click castsequence FS-LvB-CL-LB, which is CL 3-4 seconds into a pull and then every 3.5 seconds thereafter, unless recasting FS/LvB.
The pally at 71st was a much stronger tank for secondary targets when boxed, then the druid at 76th...

However, when I one-box the druid, I have no issues with threat for singles or groups.
It's just the pally is incredibly easy to box, for both single and aoe threat.
The warrior might be in this category - amazing one-boxed, but too many things to click on demand to be boxed very effectively for multiple target pulls; not sure on this, have never boxed a warrior.

Have not really tried the druid in instances since...
But have broken their moves down to three buttons, instead of a click sequence.
Which imitates the moves I most frequently use when one boxing.
And then have the dps with their click sequences on each of these keybinds.

The priest could take aggro on secondary mobs from heals.
I box all druids, and sometimes I also run into trouble with mobs attacking my healers. They almost never attack the boomkins.... I swipe and swipe, challenge roar etc. but still im unable to not getting some aggro on my healer once in a while. I guess its because I suck

I just have to look at the Moo's and im confident in my team.
