Default New MultiBox Machine.. Comments on my Build Please.

OK, i've decided to do a complete update of my system and wanted feed back from other multiboxers who run a single system and 5 wow accounts.

Currently i'm running a Q6600 overclocked to 3.2ghz, 8 Gb ram, 2 x 8800GTS cards on four monitors. Currently i have to run all my accounts on a really low framerate and resolution, and i dare not go near busy cities. I'm also an avid gamer anyway so i like to play many types of game.

    So anyway to the meat of the post below is the spec i intend going for;

As you can see its fairly high end, i've decided to go with a system i can overclock to around 4ghz on the i7 920 chip and OC the memory as well.

The SSD will hold games and OS.

My monitor setup will be 3 attached to the ATI 5870 and then 2 attached to one 8800GTS and one to the other (6 screens). I'll run 3 wow on the ATI card and one each on the 8800 cards.

So my question is how will this perform in multiboxing? anybody using anyting similar in spec or part of my spec they can feedback on?

i have not used any of those parts, still using a q6600 like yourself

but I just wonder why you need 2 dvd/cd drives? also can you make wow use certain video cards, like you are wanting to do? I never heard of anyone doing it like that, unless you just want to use the nvidia physx stuff for games.

and that power supply, is it quality stuff? I never seen any reviews on Lian power supplies so i really can not comment any further.

but everything else looks ok. maybe someone with a little more knowledge with i7's can help you more

This system will perform very well.

Did you specifically pick this Crucial ssd? I think it is hardly the best you can get for the money. The best SSD at this moment are the Intel ones proven by several reviews over again.

Although I did find a review that was rather positive about the Crucial drive I think it will not beat the Intel drive. It has the Indilinx controller just as the OCZ Vertex series and some other ssd's. They can put out a high write speed but this is only with big files. The higher the maximum write speed the lower the write speed on small files.

I think it is worth it to reconsider an Intel ssd.

I think vista won't let you mix graphics card chipsets, so in order to use the existing nvidia cards you'll have to go with a new nvidia one and forego ati. Unless you run xp.

    Don't.

I had an OCZ Vertex (60GB) for something like 6 months now, and it really makes a huge difference when it comes to the only thing I bought it for : Multiboxing.

Yeah, keep the SSD. I run a similar system, minus the SSD and I really want to go this route soon. I am running one 9800 GT to stunning affect so I assume the 5870 will do well, but I don't know about mixing the 8800s :/ One thing to consider is how will Windows 7 handle this situation. I"m only running two displays atm.

Yeah - ATI and NVidia don't mix well. The problem isn't so much the physical cards, but the drivers. Neither wants to have the other driver installed.

Also for 3 monitors on the 5870 be sure that one of them is display port. You can't do HDMI and 2x DVI. Apparently the HDMI shares the internal connection with one of the DVIs.

yes one of my monitors is displayport.

as for nvidia / ati compatibility i'll try it if not i will sell them and get a cheaper 57xx or 48xx
