Most people don't know this but VLC is actually an amazingly powerful, free player AND transcoder. It can rip raw video, like FRAPS but full screen. If you want to play AND real time encode it, you need a beefy PC. Like a quad core.
You will want to record screen:// (file, open file, screen://).
To save it, click save/stream, click save to file, give it a full path, select raw encapsulation and presto. A really big, uncompressed file, just like FRAPS, etc. You can evoke it with hotkeys, access recording over the net or your lan, modify it, crop it, take shots over time, evoke it with a command line, multicast, etc, etc.
