Default Troubleshooting EQ2 - Help needed please

After everything I read here I really got tempted to try out EQ2.
Bought The Shadow Odyssey and installed it... omg really bad experience here.

I'm running Quad Core, dual 8800Gt and Vista 32bit.

The game runs till I try to connect to a server and then just crashes...
I started reading some tech support and it's even scarier:
I have directx 10 and it's not supported and it seems not to be an apparent way to downgrade as they strongly suggest to 9.0c.
I thought maybe my video drivers aren't up to date. I was right, downloaded latest version just to find out that the recommended drivers for my card are dated August last year... older than those I have now.

I unistalled everything, reinstalled it and I now see the message No servers available, I don't know if that might be the problem.

This isn't really a issue (or it can be the real reason rofl ^^). After having installed The Shadow Odyssey, I have an update of almost 8 hours (I don't know if there's some way to know at what speed I'm downloading but my connection is a steady 130k/s. is it normal to have such a huge update even having bought the latest expansion?
When I say this might be the reason behind the crashes is that I didn't wait for it (ongoing still) to launch the game and since I was able to create a character, choose server, etc I thought this update thingie might be some weird thing going on along with all the others.

I really hope someone can give me some insight on all this and hopefully some solutions to it too. I was thinking about 6 boxing it but if all this trouble and not even ingame yet...

I just hope I'm being a true jerk xD

    Cheers and thanks all.

Thank you but the thing is it won't revert to an older version if a recent one is detected

Have you ran DXDiag from the run command? It should be able to tell you if there is a problem with directx.

There should be a maunual uninstall process out there for the newer version. I just installed DX9 on my windows 7 install that has directx10. So now i have both.....

    Yes, no problems detected.

The link you provided is to uninstall directx 9 and not 10 and 9 is what Sony recommends. i don't even know if other users here had to go through all this hassle...

I really hope the problem comes from that ongoing update and it might be the reason why I see in the station launcher the message stating No servers up. I'm used to wow where you can't launch it without having it updated but this might work differently.

From your post i thought you had a version of DX9 already installed and was suggesting that you uninstall it so you can install it from scratch.

If you dont have any version of DX9 on your computer you can get it from HERE

Unless windows 7 is different from your vista - i didn't have any issues installing Directx 9 when directx 10 already existed.

im runnning a quad core with 4gb ram windows 7 64bit and have tried both an ati 4890 and 9800 gt and it
runs fine, but you will only get a max of 4 instances running smoothly with that setup.

    Welcome to EQ2 boxing Altsoba!

    PC specs:
    - Your PC specs aren't a problem at all
    - The game runs on both 32 and 64 bit Vista with a huge range of GCards

The game runs till I try to connect to a server and then just crashes...
    1)
    - Did you try running it as administrator? (R Click EQ2 icon, click run as admin, enter admin pword)
    - Have personally found that a fair few games don't run at all unless I run as admin
    2)
    - There are 2 x EQ2 application icons to start the game
    - The first runs the patcher which you MUST run to make sure the game is up to date escpecially after purchasing
    - The second does not run the patcher, if you clicked this by accident, the game has no chance at all to run due to all the patches since TSO came out (ok to run this one if you are positive the game is up to date)
    3)
    - Make sure the game is fully patched

I have directx 10 and it's not supported
    - Bullsh1t - the game runs just fine dx10 or no dx10

I thought maybe my video drivers aren't up to date. I was right, downloaded latest version...
    - always run the latest drivers to get the best out of the game

... just to find out that the recommended drivers for my card are dated August last year...
    - that would be the 'minimum' recommended drivers

I unistalled everything, reinstalled it and I now see the message No servers available
    - still sounds like you may be hitting the run application icon or not running as admin or you haven't patched correctly

After having installed The Shadow Odyssey, I have an update of almost 8 hours (I don't know if there's some way to know at what speed I'm downloading but my connection is a steady 130k/s. is it normal to have such a huge update even having bought the latest expansion?
    - d/load speed - depends on your connection, location, etc., no real way to determine exactly as it will change
    - huge update - yep - always

When I say this might be the reason behind the crashes is that I didn't wait for it (ongoing still) to launch the game and since I was able to create a character, choose server, etc I thought this update thingie might be some weird thing going on along with all the others.
    - Ooook, so the game was updating...and you tried to run/start the game before the update has completed?

    Ok.....

    - stand up
    - take right hand
    - slap yourself silly across the face
    - sit down
    - after composing yourself
    - right click the EQ2.exe icon (which is the patcher version)
    - run as admin
    - WAIT for the thing to patch - do it late at night when you go to bed, it should be completed by the time you wake up
    - enjoy!
