My interpretation of what is meant by "scripted clients"...

Since this game (Runes of Magic) does not have any limitations as to what you can or can not do with the in-game scripting system, people are running with multiple characters, where the following character is doing nothing but monitoring the main. If the main needs a heal, it will heal. If the main is attacking, it will attack too. Completely automated. I believe this is what they are talking about. If you read the other link I posted http://tinyurl.com/is-not-a-bot, you will see another RoM representative saying "Multi-boxing is allowed! Botting is NOT allowed!".

Put it this way... I've been playing the game for over 3 months now and I've been reported over 500 times. Just recently, the GMs banned a LOT of people for all kinds of ToS issues. I'm still around.

    Edit:

To add to this... I was recently reported on the RoM forums, where another player posted 4 screen shots of me in action. A GM had removed the screen shots and said "We do not bash other players on the forums. If you have a problem, you need to issue a ticket."...and /closed the thread.

    Thanks for the reply Farleito

I did read both links - plus a whole herd of posts after doing a RoM forum search - tbth, there is a huge amount of conflicting comments from both the players AND the GMs - which is why I asked - bit surprised tbh with some of the GMs comments...not exactly mature sometimes

Seems to be a whole lot of mboxing hate - no matter

Dloaded and just playing the 1 char atm to get a feel for what is what - got a paladin to 12 so seems ok

I take it that if I wanted to start up 5 more chars I need a different email account per char? (seemed to have a problem when I just entered the same account each time)

The ROM community as a whole is somewhat immature, u'll automaticly be called bot and screamed at for cheating..however I've also been boxing in ROM for over a month without issue. Aside from being a giant pvp target thats about as bad as it gets for me. Just ignore the jerks and keep having fun is what I do.

Also, if you ask the staff for a clarification on the ToS your post will be removed and you will be banned.

I am banned for a month for the following post:

From the ToS as of 10-2-09:

    Section 2.D.

What does this mean? Simple; Play the game from 1 computer. What's a "game platform"? It's a catch-all in case somebody says "...well it's not a computer...it's a <insert your special word, that really means computer...but doesn't sound like computer>"

Ok, so that pretty much kills Multi-boxing - playing the game, simultaneously, across multiple computers. Most likely, this addition to the ToS was not to directly interfere with these types of players, but instead to prevent the gold farmers from making 500 accounts and using many computers to farm out gold/items/charges/ban-avoidance.

Ok, so how do I "multi-box" from a single computer?

    Simple; Keyclone.

Now, before any of you drop the "it's a bot program" line... let me give you the definition of a "bot":

A bot (short for "robot") is a program that operates as an agent for a user or another program or simulates a human activity.

Still want to disagree? What's that you say? 3rd party program? Hmmm...

    ToS Section 4.A.

What does that mean? It means...Don't use programs that modify Game Content to change Game play.
Still unclear? How about "Don't modify Game Content"?
Don't know how to modify Game Content? Then you probably have nothing to worry about.

Let's try the next hit on the search for the word "third-party" in the ToS:

    <gasp> That's a mouth full!
Ok...no rewriting or modifying of the user interface...that's straight forward.
No manipulating data to use the System to [do anything or get anything] not actually acquired or performed in the Game.

In other words...no programs that give you (but not limited to) increased speed, infinite buffs, infinite health, gold, locations of others, etc...
    In other...other words... don't cheat!

Ok, the next hit of "third-party": ...wait a minute... there are no more hits! Just a bunch of legal terms referencing people, not software.

Nowhere does it mention that you can not send a single key-stroke to all clients. Keyclone does exactly that. If you're not pushing buttons, your character will do nothing. If you jump, all of your characters jump. OMG Amazing! Well.. not really... I can already do that on a single character. Ok, well how about...attacking at the same time! Oooooooh. Wait, I can attack on a single character. <yawn> Oh, that's right... I did say multiple characters, at the same time... okay... [Ventrillo voice chat] - Everybody target that guy....3, 2, 1, FIRE! Amazing! Many characters doing the same thing! Is Ventrillo a "bot program" too? It is 3rd party.

Back to my point - Keyclone does not do anything against the ToS. Want to test it out for yourself? Run Keyclone with a single character. Show me the magic. Tell me what you can do "to [do anything or get anything] not actually acquired or performed in the Game." Now, with multiple characters? Any difference?

I invite you to reply to this post, however, keep in mind that while everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion...truth and evidence hold more value. If you're going to reply, and disagree, please support your comment with quotes from the current ToS.

...and as always, please follow the forum rules.
This is sad. So because they believe that no other MMORPGs allow multiboxing, they are going to not allow it. There was a post by one of their GMs asking if anyone knew of any major MMORPGs that allowed multiboxing. Guess none of their GMs played World of Warcraft.

    Default concurrently?

I just started multi-boxing RoM (had trouble affording it in other games) and am sad to see they changed the ToS. I read the former, lengthy, RoM forum post about multi-boxing (http://forum.us.runesofmagic.com/showthread.php?t=11076), where the GM says "um, are there any other MMOs that allow multi-boxing??" and was psyched to start here.

So, non-scripted multi-clienting is the only way to go? I have no doubt my quad-core can handle 6 clients. Keyclone should be safe because it is not, as the OP points out, enabling anything that couldn't be done by alt-tabbing through all the windows really quickly.

If it's all through one router they can't prove it either way. I guess I'll keep playing... and hope I don't have to fight it out with a GM!

Honestly, I can only recommend that you "stand-by" for now. I do not believe that Frogster has made any final decisions on it, while the GM's are trigger happy. It is important to know that the GTM (volunteer "non-GM's"; aka tattle-tales) are not employed and do not represent Frogster. They can only report you to a GM. If you run into one of these, don't bother making an argument. There is nothing to gain. All of their comments on "multi-boxing/clienting" have been removed from the forums. The fact that their posts have been removed means a power higher-up disagrees with their interpretation.

Another important fact - "Runes of Magic" is sort of like a franchise. Runewalker Entertainment Ltd. designed and developed the game. Each developer "funds" the game (either time and/or money) with a stakeholder position in the profits.

Frogster Interactive licenses, operates and markets online games. They have several, independent, branches (US, German, Korea, etc...). They have about 80-ish staff members in all fields (marketing, PR, web design, web development, community management, customer support, hosting, billing and administration). They were founded in 2005.

My reason for bringing this up is because it points out that the two are not the same. Since Frogster hosts the game, they set the rules (ToS/EULA). When they make a bad decision, it can cause Runewalker to lose out on a lot of money (royalties). When they have volunteer "staff" providing an "official" response, things get even worse.

I strongly believe the recent ToS change was to impact gold-farmers and not the genuine multi-boxers. It may take some time, but I think they will word it a little differently.

Octopus works with Runes of Magic. It's best to use Windowed mode and there shouldn't be any issues, at least none that I've found. If using full screen and KVM, the mouse may get stuck on one of the windows. So it's best to use windowed mode to avoid that issue. Other than that, I've found Octopus works nicely just as it does with WoW.

That's wonderful...but did you read the entire thread? Multiboxing is against the ToS.

Oh that's great so you're going to continue to multibox Runes of Magic after three months even though it is against the Terms of Service?
