If the group gets to 5000 gold from questing (and let's face it, that's very likely) I may just get them the fast flying mounts. But it's also possible that by that time I'll feel as if they don't need them.

My gatherer toons already have the fast flying mount, so I'm covered if I want to go on herb/mining/mote runs. Then again, I have nothing to spend my gold on, and the guild bank is at 18,000 gold and climbing. It will probably have somewhere between 25,000 and 30,000 gold by the time the group is able to afford the 300 riding skill. So at that point I may get it because there's no reason not to.
great approach. I had a bunch of gold on my team when I hit 80 and went and bought a whole bunch of gear for them, it would have been a lot wiser to get the flying skill sorted out first, farm dailies and then buy gear.
