From what i know it is impossible to keep your target selected when it dies. Even sticky targeting doesn't help. I think this change was made long time ago so hunters FD would work better...

Nothing stops you from re-targeting when you died.

    Also, your slaves could include:
    /targetlasttarget or /targetlastenemy

    So your macro might be:

    #show
    /targetlastenemy
    /cast [target=targettarget] [] Lightning Bolt

If your main is dead or CC'd, your slaves will target the last thing they were nuking by default.
While your main is CC'd, you cannot determine her target, this is useful for pvp play.

The question of the original poster was... is there a way to retain your target, while dead. He worded it, in the reverse, is there a way to not lose it.

let me explane what i was planning in the first place i am currently 2 boxing shamans and came across this Gathering and Looting with Slaves So i wana be able to keep the slave targeted on the lootable/skinnable target so i dont have to use a 2nd macro to have her retarget it. I cant seem to find a way to do this and i couldent find anyway to bind more than one command to a single key. Anyone have thoughts on this? im still kinda new to duel boxing
